I've stayed here twice: 4 nights in 2004, and another 3 in July 2008; I found the place in the online Alastair Sawday guide ). Eliane and Jean-Louis Lunes run the family farm, raising sheep and harvesting chestnuts and walnuts: Eliane's preserves are available at the little farm shop. They have converted a big stone barn into a self-catering gîte on the ground floor, and two B&B rooms on the upstairs - there's a separate entrance for each floor. The bedroom is simple (no TV or computer!) but nicely furnished with antique country furniture (though updated: the massive oak bedstead has a modern steel frame and mattress within). There's a small ensuite bathroom (with over-bath shower) and separate WC, also ensuite. Lovely breakfasts: good coffee (a freshly prepared Moka pot), fruit or cheese, walnuts, bread, and a huge selection of Eliane's preserves. Breakfast is served either on the little terrace outside the B&B rooms, or in the breakfast room, which has a little kitchen corner with cooking rings, a microwave, and a fridge, which B&B guests are welcome to use. Also in the breakfast room are 3 ring binders with an extensive collection of local brochures and walking routes to borrow; also French guides to the local flora & fauna, and copies of the Michelin Vert Languedoc-Rousillon and Midi-Pyrenées. There's lots of good walking in the immediate area (the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut Languedoc); and great swimming in the river Orb at Roquebrun and Ceps. The farm is in a wonderfully peaceful setting just outside the timy hamlet of Prouilhe. The local village is Courniou, 3.5km down the lane, with a couple of nice little local restaurants; the market town of St-Pons-de-Thomières is another 5 km along the main road. Possibly the best thing is the price: remarkable value at €50 for double occupancy or €39 for single. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
