Le Luc is a gorgeous bed & breakfast in the Médoc. It is surrounded by Bordeaux vineyards and the inn is only a few km outside the town of Pauillac. It is the quintessential country inn with gardens and flowers everywhere. When we stayed in August 2002, a group of fuzzy baby ducks was swimming in the small pond in the back yard. The room rates, with breakfast, range from around 40 to 65 Euros, and that is a BARGAIN. When we arrived, we were greeted by our wonderful hosts, Philippe and Monika Achener. English, French, and German is spoken at the inn. Philippe is a former Cellar Master at La Tour Carnet, a 4th Grand Cru. Monika runs the kitchen and is a fabulous cook. Breakfast was just outstanding! It was not the typical pastries and coffee, but a choice of ham, cheese, granola and a few other things that I can't remember with coffee, tea, and juice. Monika's homemade jams were a highlight. Philippe and Monika will also book tours of local Chateaux for a small, well-worth-it fee (I think it was around 5 Euros). We toured Chateau Mouton Rothschild (1st Grand Cru) and Chateau Pichon Loungueville (Baron) (2nd Grand Cru), the latter at Philippe's suggestion. We booked the tours well in advance along with the room. Both tours were outstanding and in English. They will also help with other activities in the area. Philippe and Monika also suggested a nice restaurant in the area when we arrived and they made the reservation for us. I believe the restaurant was simply Le Restaurant St. Julien. Dinner is not served at the inn, but there are several restaurants nearby. We stayed in the Suite at Le Luc. The room was large with a queen bed, and the bathroom was enormous. It overlooked the backyard as well as one side of the house. The room was great and it was only 62 Euros. It was the most reasonably priced place we stayed, yet one of the nicest. I have stayed at many bed & breakfasts and this is definitely top-of-the-line. It deserves a highest recommendation, and the surrounding area is unbelievable. I will definitely return, and I want to stay at Le Luc! This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
