We stayed here with Michel and Johnny for 5 nights in September. The hotel is truly like a home, very informal and welcoming yet stylish and elegant. Beautifully proportioned rooms are individually designed and furnished with french antiques. Each has large shutters opening to reveal lovely views of the village green or gardens. Our hosts, English Johnny and French Michel were great fun and nothing was too much trouble (suggesting places to go, recommending and booking local restaurants for us, drawing maps of the area, and even helping us with our French!) Michel's cooking is out of this world, served in the elegant dining room. The hotel is appealing at all times of year. Even in the hottest weather the shuttered rooms, high ceilings and shady courtyard provide ample protection and in winter the warmth of the hospitality stirs the soul. Highly recommended - not to be missed! Tim and Kate McGowan Reviewed by: heatherl from TX, review #227 When: August 2002
We stayed at this hotel for three fabulous nights in August 2002, and I would highly recommend it! The house is a 19th century mansion converted to a bed & breakfast. The attention to detail on the decor is unparalleled by any B&B or small hotel in which I've stayed. The outside features a pebbled terrace with outdoor furniture, and on the side of the house, is a nice pool. Unfortunately, it was unseasonably cool when we visited so we could not take advantage of the pool. If you look on the website, we stayed in "Bedroom Three" at a price around 100 Euros per night. It has two twin beds and an extremely large, private bathroom with a tub and a walk-in shower. The bed linens are nice and the pillows quite comfortable as well. Our room also had a coffee maker and satellite TV. Our view was overlooking the pool and garden--beautiful! Our room had interesting art as well as antique furniture and two comfortable chairs. Daily maid service was also provided. You can get drinks from their refrigerator on the honor system. Last and certainly not least is what really sets this place apart from many others--the hosts! Johnny and Michel are two of the greatest guys I have ever met and comprise a colorful couple. Johnny is British; he takes care of the business end of things. Michel is French, and he is the chef extraordinaire. Meals can be booked in advance and should not be missed. On the night we arrived we had requested a meal. We were graciously greeted at the gate with open arms, then we went to our room to freshen up. Before the meal, we had an aperitif or two and met the other guests. There was a couple from England, a couple from the US (both were returning guests, I should mention, and I see why they returned), and another couple that lived in Paris, but the man was German and the woman French. A friend of Johnny and Michel's also attended. The meal was incredible from the fresh salads, through the entree, and to the tarts for dessert. Wine and the aperitif was included in the fixed price. This meal was one of the highlights of my trip to France -- fabulous food and even better company. The little village is about 5 miles north of Uzes. The La Bruguiere was a small, cute village, but Uzes was livelier. Uzes has lots of restaurants and it is gorgeous. There are many of pictures of the area on the Les Marronniers website. From the B&B, it is only a short drive to the Pont du Gard and Avignon. I will definitely make it a point to return here every time I revisit France. I was so impressed with this place that I cannot recommend Les Marronniers highly enough! To top off this wonderful stay, when we checked out, Johnny presented us with an online photo album cd of our stay. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
