A Parisian Treat ... 4 stars plus.

NOTE: Since the time of this review, the Plaza Paris Vendome Hotel has become a Marriott Renaissance hotel.

4 plus star rates from around 400 euros per room per night but many special packages available, which represent excellent value for money. Make sure you choose one that includes breakfast.

Our New Year package gave us a prestige room, breakfast, chocolates from the super trendy Jean Paul-Hevin around the corner and hot chocolate in the library, for 350 euros a night.

The hotel is unique to Paris; a boutique hotel with a swimming pool and spa area, highly recommended as these areas are enchanting, too.

We loved our friendly welcome and super stylish public rooms, but best of all was the comfort of our exquisite bedroom. It was decorated in camel and beige tones with dark red maroon as an accent, with much use of cloth on the walls. The room was thoughtfully equipped and felt light and airy with a firm and comfortable double bed. Furniture was thoroughly modern with a flat screen television.

The bathroom was lovely; well lit and stocked with a plentiful supply of towels and a good separate shower. Bathrobes and slippers were also supplied along with toiletries by Bulgari.

The decor throughout was modern with one or two unexpected twists like the Chinese bar. The naturally lit atrium/reception from a glass triangular dome is a big success but the library was not big enough to permit people to smoke in without causing offence to non smokers.

Breakfast was something of a disappointment and we did not feel the restaurant's decor was up to the same standard as the rest of the hotel's public areas. It was nice enough but it didn't have the same panache. We didn't dine in but the same room is used for both breakfast and dinner.

We loved being so close to everything especially the Louvre, and Cafe Marly became a favourite haunt on this trip. Excellent for dinner, morning coffee or lunch with fabulous views over the Louvre's Pyramid or French Sculpture Hall.

It took about 5 minutes to walk from the hotel to the Tuileries, a little longer to the Louvre.

Staff were charming throughout with a good concierge service but note that our tickets to an exhibition were charged double their face value! Likewise the limousine service, 120 euros to be met at Gare Du Nord or 12 euros by taxi!!!

This was our first experience of staying in the 1st arrondissement, and we were very pleased with our choice. It was delightful to step out onto the Place Vendome to see everything prettily decorated for Christmas and the high end shops looked just wonderful, especially the Parfumerie of Annick Goutal.

We have been loyal to St. Germaine for about 30 years so it was definitely time to make a change!

I feel this hotel will settle down to become one of Paris's finest. It just requires a new take on breakfast and a little more continuity with its Concierge staff to achieve this. I encourage you to spoil yourselves!
