Wanting to spend the night in Bandol after wine-tasting we did some research before we left and found this little gem. For 84 euros/night, in high season, we had a sea-view room, with windows that open onto the bay. The bathroom had a shower, toilet and sink. It was definitely a small room, but perfect for the night. The hotel and the views are prettier in person than on any of the websites. The hotel has direct access to the beach, and when I mentioned we didn't have beach towels the lady at the reception desk gave us towels for the beach! Breakfast is served either in the dining room or on the terrace. One drawback - no A/C; it was hot and humid. However, we had brought the fan from our rental house and were comfortable. Free parking! Everything in easy walking distance - bakeries, cafes, bars, marina, market, you name it! Reviewed by: Kaydee from TN, review #2020 When: July 2007
Our family spent one night in the delightful town of Bandol on the Mediterranean Sea (between Marseille and Toulon). The Hotel Splendid, a two-star hotel, is located a short walk from the center of Bandol on the pretty bay and beach of Renecros. The hotel sits right on the Renecros Bay, and many rooms have a direct view of the sea. We were looking for an inexpensive hotel with a room for a family of three, and because of its location, this hotel turned out to be better than I expected. (It's the location that really makes it "splendid.") We knew that we would spend very little time in the room. Our room was small and simple (€94 for a triple room) ... actually a small suite. The main bedroom had a double bed and a large cupboard. The adjoining tiny bedroom had a single bed foor our daughter, leading to a large sunny tiled bathroom with a view of the sea. The bathroom had a toilet, bidet, sink, and shower. If I were to stay here again (we came down from another part of Provence just for the night), I would bring extra pillows and a fan. The staff was welcoming and helpful. The woman who took our reservation over the phone spoke English well. The hotel does have a small nearby lot, and parking is available for 8 euro a day. We didn’t have breakfast at the hotel (we ate on the main square in Bandol), but there was a large sunny breakfast room overlooking the sea and a sunny guest lounge. Breakfast was also served on the outdoor terrace, again with a view of the sea. My husband enjoyed this shady terrace while my daughter and I were at the beach. From the terrace, you can go through a gate to join a small set of steps that go down to the sea. You can be on the beach in two minutes. The narrow beach makes a circular arc around the bay, and the setting is quite picturesque. (In the photo posted with this review, the hotel is the tall white building around to the left, with its terrace just to the right.) We really enjoyed the town of Bandol, and it’s a great place to experience the Mediterranean Sea ... less than a two hours drive from Bonnieux in the Luberon. We especially enjoyed spending several hours on the tiny island of Bendor, a seven minute ferry ride from Bandol. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
