03 ARR: Chez Omar

47, rue de Bretagne , Phone: 01.42.72.3626

When: 2006

Very good couscous place in the northern Marais, a great choice for lunch when in the area.

Directions: Closest Metro is Marts et Metiers

Chez Omar serves reliably well prepared couscous in an informal, lively setting. Great people-watching, from tourists to cranky old men regulars. You may be sharing one of the long tables when it's crowded, which is fun.

The couscous is served in the proper traditional style, where you're given a large platter of the steamed couscous grain; the bowl of savory stew of vegetables and chickpeas; a platter of the meat of your choice; and a little bowl of fiery harissa. The chicken is wonderful, as is the lamb. For those who don't want couscous, the grilled meats and frites are also excellent.

Lunch for two (two plats and coffee) was 31 euros. No credit cards, no reservations.
