A tourist trap that works.

My falafel from L'As du Falafel, photo by David B.

As we all know, no first trip to the Marais can be complete without a stop at L'As du Falafel. Paris is full of places that, while being tourist traps, also genuinely deliver the goods year after year, and this legendary chick pea joint is one of them. I've never eaten inside, but rather take my falafel to go and eat it as I walk. The falafel, which possesses the perfect crispy shell and soft, seasoned inside, never ever disappoints. Service is always fast and furious. Never get tired of this place.

Fun, hip middle eastern food in the Marais

L'As du Fallafel serves up large portions of really fresh and tasty food.

We arrived at an off-time - about 2:30 or 3:00 PM - and were given a table right away. We had a large plate of hummus, baba ganoush and cucumber salad as a starter, then went on to sandwiches of falafel and lamb schwarma. It was all really good and very filling. We also shared a very nice kosher Rose wine from Provence. Watch out for the hot sauce on the table - it has quite a bite.

This place lives up to its reputation and is an interesting and fun place to hang out. I wouldn't call it inexpensive, if you sit inside and have wine and more than a falafel, but it is definitely moderate. It's a great place to try something a bit different in Paris.

Fabulous Falafel!

Enjoying our falafel special, photo by One of the waiters took our photo

May 2007: My friend Louisa and I dined here for dinner one night after having an expensive lunch. We knew L'As du Fallafel had reasonable prices, but wow, we didn't know how fabulous it was! We both ordered their Fallafel Special (6.50€): A large pita bread over stuffed with fallafel, hummus, grilled eggplant, cabbage, radish, tomato, cucumber.

On the table was hot sauce, which we added to our sandwich. This was quite filling and so delicious! The hummus was creamy and the best I have ever had! We shared a small bottle of red wine (9€). Total 15.50€ per person. We had a good list of restaurants for our time in Paris, but really wish we had returned again another night. Highly recommended!

What a great place to get a quick lunch in the Marais! We ate there twice in October 2006. Well, actually, we stood in line outside, told a guy working the line what we wanted, paid him, got a "chit", presented it at the take-away window, and were on our way in a very short time. The line may seem long, but the service is very quick. There is seating inside, but we have no idea what the interior is like.

Price? Inexpensive.

Experience? Unique.

Would we go there again?

In a heartbeat!
