Come early for lunch and sample Yves Camdeborde's wonderful cooking.

Customers book months ahead for the single seating dinner at Le Comptoir. I'd never be bothered, but we love coming here for lunch, especially when arriving on a US flight that morning. Reservations are not taken and queues form before the restaurant opens at noon, which makes it perfect for jet lagged travelers who want an early bite to eat and want it to be delicious. So arrive at 11:45 or around 2:00.

People love to hate this place (rude waiters, too many tourists), but my husband and I have had lunch here at least five times and, frankly, love it. In our experience, the clientele is an equal mixture of tourists, well-dressed Parisien "ladies who lunch" and on Sunday, an elderly couple or two. Our servers are frequently friendly and, at worst, brusque but not rude. However, it's probably helpful to be able to decipher the French menu on your own.

The menu is perfect for all appetites and we've never had one item we didn't love. Occasionally, dishes featured on the dinner menu are available for lunch. On our recent visit, I just had bouillon and a perfect omelet Basquaise, while my husband had a lovely squash soup followed by beautiful scrambled eggs with generous portion of fresh black truffles. The lobster bisque is to die for. Charcuterie and meats are impeccably sourced. Cuisine of SW French is heavily featured. I'd go twice a month for a bite if I lived around the corner.
