Simple, good value restaurant just outside the historic centre.

Rue Conti is a pedestrianized street just outside the historical centre, and the restaurant has some outdoor tables in a little alley up the side: the best choice for a hot July lunchtime.

There’s a good looking €12.50 lunch menu, but I went for the €16 ‘Péché Mignon de Molière’ (Molière’s indulgence). There’s lots of Molière in Pézenas: the playwright spent several years here under the patronage of the prince de Conti, Languedoc’s governor. I started with a typical local salad, here going under the fanciful name of ‘le Remerciement au Roi’: warm lardons, gésiers and potato slices on a big bed of lettuce and tomatoes dressed with a nicely mustardy mayonnaise. A huge portion! (Also on offer were escargots or terrine)

My main course choice was Onglet a l’échalotte. Onglet is one of my favourite steaks (UK: skirt, US: hanger), and this was perfectly cooked (nicely rare) and brilliantly tasty. Unusually, the shallots weren’t in a sauce: instead there was a little glass ramekin of finely minced raw shallot (and a touch of garlic) – really good.

There was a selection of simple desserts: I chose the tarte au citron, which was fine, but not up to the standard of the starter or main. With a 25cl pichet of decent red and a coffee, it all came to €21.30.
