An oasis of calm (with its own palm trees!) in a tiny courtyard in Pézenas’ historic centre: eclectic food from all round the Mediterranean.

Les Palmiers looks a little unprepossessing from the street (in the heart of the historic centre), but enter through the large wooden gates, and you’re in a tall, narrow courtyard between two buildings, open to the skies (though with big canvas sunscreens when the sun gets high). Above you is a mezzanine area on steel frame, on the walls there’s modern art, ahead of you are two huge palm trees (giving the restaurant its name), and at the end of the courtyard there’s a modern, open kitchen.

The menu is ‘pan-Mediterranean’ (my term, not theirs!) I forgot to photograph it, so can only report on what I had. Which was the lunchtime Plat du Jour at €10: this day it was Köfte Kebab. This was superb: interestingly spiced minced lamb, grilled on a skewer, served with grilled peppers, aubergine, courgette & radishes, and a cucumber/yogurt relish.

After this, I had room for a dessert, and chose nage de fraises. Spectacularly good: a ball of mint sorbet atop a pile of macerated strawberries, sitting on a crispy biscuit crumb layer, with a foundation layer of vividly flavoured lemon curd. And I finished with a coffee: the best (i.e. the most Italian!) so far. With a 25cl pichet of red, the bill came to €24. Definitely a place to return to.
