Vacation rentals in France (farms, cottages, gites, apartments)
Review 1067: Owner, Domaine du Crestet - Grenache house
2bed/2bath apartment, Vaison la Romaine, Provence
Aug 7th - 14th 2004, 1 Week
We arrived at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon after being given very explicit directions on how to arrive (which is always a big plus and they best way to start a vacation!) We were greeted with a big smile from one of our hosts Paul. He immediately showed us around and gave us a quick tour of the apartment, which we were very pleased with as it was exactly like it was portrayed on the website. It was almost identical to a place the we stayed at and loved last summer in Umbria! A bottle of wine was waitng for us in the kitchen from our hosts which was another nice touch.
Each of the 2 bedrooms had a shower which is key when traveling with 2 teenage girls! Both of the bedrooms had fans to keep us cool at night, which is another big plus! The apartment was all very warmly decorated with an authentic French country feel. The two-level outdoor patios and landscaping provided a good separation from the parking area for two of the apartments; other units faced in the direction of the vineyards and Mt. Ventoux. The patios themselves were furnished with beautiful teak furniture, and a BBQ, everything one needs to enjoy a dinner al fresco.
I prepared a few good meals in their very well equipped kitchen, nothing was lacking at all which seems to be a problem in so many vacation rentals.
If one didn't have to desire to cook, a pizzeria was quite literally right across the street and many other great resturants were within 1/2 hours drive or less.
On arrival Paul informed us of the evening meeting of all the guests and owners for cocktails in the courtyard from 6 - 7 p.m. This was a great way to meet all the other guests and our hosts. We discovered that everyone had been to this domaine quite a few times before and we were the only first timers! All of the guests we found to be very friendly and helpful, from New York, Holland and England. Unfortuneatly we had to leave the get together a little early as we were driving to Orange to see an Opera.
A few days later the owners put on a table d haute outdoors for the guests at 20 Euro a person including wine, this was another wonderful evening with all the right ingredients for a wonderful evening, good food, great ambience and wonderful conversation. Another great opportunity to get to know our hosts and the other guests.
Our girls made friends immediatly with a couple of the English teen girls and a son of one of the owners. This is always a big plus when traveling with kids, the ability to give them the option to stay at home and hang with other teens by the pool.
Le Crestet has an amazing location and is close to many of the great hill towns of Provence, Vaison-la-Romaine and Seguret, both being just a few minutes away. We did many other day trips to Gordes, Rousillon, Le Baux, Orange, Isle du Sorgue, St. Remy and Mt. Ventoux.
An added bonus was having the tiny village of Crestet on the hill right behind us. This was a nice 20 minute walk from the vacation rental and offered fabulous views of the surrounding area, not to mention that the hilltown was just completely enchanting. Also within a few minutes is Le Barroux with the Abbaye Ste. Madeline where the monks perform gregorian chants at 9:30 a.m.
Charming hosts, wonderful accommodation and a fabulous way to initiate us into France and all its beauty.
I actually shed a small tear while leaving so I think we very well might return again.
Cost for a week for the Grenache apartment was 1145 Euro.
