Review 1130: Owner, Nice Accommodation
2 bed apartment in Nice, Provence
Nice, France, 2004, 1 week
The apartment was in a large apartment building close to the train station in Nice. My problem with the location was the noise. I would actually recommend this apartment, if it was not so noisy. I have lived in the NYC area for 10 years, including spending 7 years living right in Manhattan. And this was easily the nosiest place I have ever slept in my life. To set the scene, let me just say that I once slept through a fire alarm going off in a hotel I was staying in. Until renting this apartment I thought I could sleep through anything. Not so, I came to learn.
The garbage truck came every single day between 6am and 7am. They would park right outside my bedroom window. Since no one recycles, the trash would go in with a huge crashing sound as all the bottles broke. And there was a lot of trash from the building we were in, as it was 7 stories full of apartments and similar buildings all around. The trash truck would be there for about a half hour every morning. Once the trash truck left a delivery truck would come and unload a pallet of fruit for the store across the street. That was loud as well. And to top it off, although it seemed like we were in an out of the way area I felt as if every single car in Nice went down our street. There were constant horns and radios etc from 6am on. Needless to say I got little sleep the entire week. We all were wide awake every morning from 6 to 7:30 or 8am and then we would all sleep a little more if we could and get up at 9.
The street it was on was convenient and nice, minus the noise. There were a few good bakeries, a small fruit shop, a tabac and a pharmacy all across the street and an atm two blocks away. There is a post office just up the block and a MonoPrix supermarket about 10 blocks away.
The building could have used some upkeep in the hallways but it did have an elevator, which was great for our suitcases. We were on the 1st floor (2nd floor US) and had a corner apartment. The apartment was in fine shape.
There was no outside area.
The furnishings were in good shape. All in all it was a comfortable apartment. There was a living room/dining room with a table for four and a sofa. The apartment was not clean but not filthy. Could have used a mopping as the floor was sticky, the dining table was covered in crumbs and there was a hair on the pillow of one of the beds.
The bedrooms were set up well. One had a double bed and a dresser and directors chair. The other had two twin beds, a night stand in between and a large dresser. There was one bathroom with a shower and sink and a seperate room for the toilet and another sink. The shower was very nice with good pressure. And the towels they provided were nice and fluffy.
The kitchen was very workable. Basically a galley kitchen. The cupboards were fully stocked with pots, pans, dishes, silverware etc. We did not cook in the kitchen. We did stock the place with snacks and picked up cheeses, meats and bread and ate dinner at the dining room table a couple times, but did not do any actual cooking.
Problems or Bonuses
The real problem was the noise. It was unbelievable. I was so happy to leave so I could get a decent nights sleep.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
They were great and really attentive when we booked. Our onsite rep was friendly but sort of unreliable. He met us on Saturday and told us he would be back on Sunday with an additional set of keys. We did not see him again until we checked out on the following Saturday. He told us that everything looked great when we left and he seemed pleased that we had cleaned up after ourselves.
We paid 750 Euro for one week in August and 215 Euro in deposit.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I would not stay here again.
I would honestly say that 90% of my reasoning is the noise. The apartment itself was fine. But the noise can really drive you to drink, as my grandmother used to say.
Things to do in this area
We enjoyed jumping on the train to town hop. Nice is a good location for doing that. We visited Monaco/Monte Carlo twice. Once for the fireworks festival. We visited Cannes once. We went to Eze for a day and we spent a day going by boat to Saint Tropez.
In Nice, there were so many restaurants and loads of shopping. Although it is a rock beach, I still liked it. Some of the beach clubs have platforms that go out over the water with ladders down into the water so you don't have to climb out of the water/rocks on your butt the way I did one day.
