4bed/2bath house near Sarlat, Aquitaine WhenJune 18 - 24, 2005, one week LocationLocated in the Dordogne, near the confluence of the Vezere and Dordogne rivers, this renovated mill (moulin) in the countryside, on acres of private land is conveniently situated for sightseeing the entire Perigord Noir; chateau, castles, and gastronomic pleasures (foie gras, truffles) abound in this most beautiful region of France of river valleys and forests. Nearby AmenitiesThe "Moulin de Poulican" is located approx. 1km. outside the village of Thonac with a few shops for bread, misc. food items, and gas; a hotel-restaurant is also in town; Montignac approx. 6km. has numerous facilities (supermarket, post office), and several top rated restaurants. The House/Apartment"Moulin de Poulican" is a converted mill with stone walls, lauze roof, and all the modern, upgraded amenities in both the kitchen and baths; totally private (with a barn as part of the complex) a small stream runs through the rear of the property. GardenPrivate outdoor areas with three separate dining tables, ping pong, and 10 acres to roam the beautiful landscape; no pool but a dip in the stream after all-day touring cooled us (two couples) more than sufficiently; there is a fantastic natural lake for swimming in Tamies (8km.). Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasThe mill is spacious even by American standards with very comfortable furniture throughout; the entire home was immaculate which reflects the pride in ownership of the hosts; TV, dvd, cd's are available in the living room. Bedrooms/BathroomsBeds were extremely comfortable (our groups #1 failing with most european rentals); bedrooms tastefully decorated with plenty storage; one full bath on the 3rd level near bedrooms and the other bath with sink and modern shower in the lower walkout level. KitchenExtremely usable kithen with brand new Miele appliances; we cooked dinner each evening of our visit after returning from local markets for fresh produce; a friend of the owner sells fresh meats from his farm just down the road from the mill. Problems or BonusesAll surprises were good as we have been renting gites, villas through the internet for 5 years and this was easily not only the finest home but the best value by far; we learned to love this area of France (Dordogne and/or Perigord)as much as Provence. Agency and Representatives (and price)The owners were gracious hosts, spoke English and all of our dealings via e-mail went without a flaw; we met the owner's daughter and husband in Paris prior to our travel to the south of France and more than enjoyed their recommendations for sightseeing, restaurants in the Dordogne; the pride of ownership of this beautiful home is apparent from their comments on its history within their family. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others? We would recommend this rental to all; this is the only villa rental in the 5 years of European travel (France, Italy, England) that I have taken the opportunity to recommend. Things to do in this areaPrehistoric caves - Medieval chatueax, castles - Canoeing on the Dordogne-Vezere rivers - Quaint villages with markets Gastronomic pleasures - many great restaurants - Hotel Restaurant Laboderie in Tamnies was our favorite.
