Review 1784: Owner, Le Marais Apartment (#15502)
2bed/1bath apartment in 3rd arrondissement, Paris
Oct 2005, 1 week
The apartment is on Rue de Turenne, just down the block and around the corner from Place des Vosges in the Marais. It's on the third floor, away from the street, with tall windows overlooking two different courtyards, making it very quiet. You couldn't hear traffic or street noise at all.
A good boulangerie across the street, a wine shop next door, small supermarket about a block away. Cafes and restaurants aplenty in every direction. There was a bus stop just a few steps away, and metro stops about 4 blocks away.
The apartment was very spacious, and the layout was convenient for our party of four. The living room has a smallish sitting area and a large dining table which gave us plenty of room for the computer, cameras, etc. We also had a small separate kitchen, two large bedrooms, and a good-sized bath.
Although there was no garden or outside seating area, we did have large windows looking down into courtyards on both the north and south sides of the apartment, so there was always a fresh breeze.
The wooden dining chairs pictured in the VRBO listing have been replaced by four small metal chairs that weren't comfortable at all. The sofa and chairs in the seating area were reasonably comfortable.
The apartment was reasonably clean, although my dust radar picked up quite a few spots the duster had missed, and the garbage can in the kitchen had a lot of built-up food debris in the bottom and was pretty stinky until we cleaned it out (NOT the way I want to spend my vacation time in Paris!).
The bedrooms were nice, although they lacked any place for hanging clothes. There was one small closet in the hallway outside the bathroom to be shared by both bedrooms. Our queen-sized bed in the master bedroom was very comfortable. Our friends reported that the twin beds in the other room needed to have the mattresses turned because they had a definite lean.
The bathroom was large and there were plenty of towels. The tub was very deep with no handrails anywhere, so it was quite difficult for the one person in our group who had some balance and strength problems.
The kitchen was very usable. There were enough dishes and other supplies. Pots and pans were adequate. We didn't cook full meals, but I think it would have been doable. There was a good washer/dryer in the kitchen.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
The owner was pleasant and a native English-speaker. The published information is a very accurate representation of the realities of the apartment. The photos were skillfully taken and show the apartment to its best advantage.
We paid E1250 a week for the apartment, which I think is a very fair price considering the spaciousness and good location.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I don't think I would stay here again, not so much because there is anything wrong with the apartment as because I kept wishing I were staying on the Left Bank, where we've always stayed before and where it feels more like home to me.
Things to do in this area
There is LOTS of shopping for the young and fashionable in this area, and I enjoyed window shopping. We had a lovely lunch at La Mule du Pape, at 8, rue du Pas de la Mule just on the other side of Place des Vosges, and fabulous pasta at an Italian restaurant, Gli Angeli, that we just wandered into a few blocks the other direction at 5, rue Saint-Gilles.
