Studio, 6th Arr, Paris WhenApril, 2006, 1 week LocationThis apartment is on Rue de Tournon, about a half block from Le Senat (Luxembourg Palace) and Luxembourg Garden. The street has car traffic, no buses, and is not very busy. Directly across the street is the Republican Guard building, which is lovely, decorated with French flags. It is very conveniently located in the 6th arrondissement, and just a few blocks from the 5th arrondisement and Saint Sulpice. The Senate building has a bell that rings every hour, but was not an issue for us - did not seem to be very loud. Closest Metro - Odeon (5 minutes), closest RER - Luxembourg (7 minutes). Nearby AmenitiesWithin walking distance are seemingly endless choices in restaurants, cafes, boulangeries, groceries, and even a pharmacy. The House/ApartmentThe apartment has been recently renovated, and is in an 18th century building, on the first floor (2nd floor, American-style). It has a small elevator typical by Paris standards. The owner emailed me the security code to enter the building, and left the keys in an easy to find location. Apparently, the apartment had been the former home of the famous dramatist/philospher Gabriel Marcel. It is a large studio apartment, with a separate small galley kitchen, large bathroom, and living space that includes, in addition to the bed, a TV/DVD/VCR with remotes, computer w/internet access, telephone, two cushioned chairs w/table, bookshelves stocked with a great little library including many travel guides to Paris, and a stereo/cd/tape player, including tapes and cds. Artwork on walls. Quiet tenants in building; thick walls. GardenNone. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasThis place is immaculate, and the owner pays attention to detail. Everything is in tiptop shape. Plenty of closet and shelf/storage space. Two large windows, and adequate lamps and lighting. Bedrooms/BathroomsThe bed is a large queen, very comfortable, and converts to a couch (a French futon, really). Four pillows are provided, and the linens are soft. Extra blankets are also available. A bedside table w/lamp on each side of bed. The bathroom is very large - there is abundant counter space around the sink. Great water pressure in the shower and sink. Plenty of towels/washrags. Heated towel rack. Blow dryer provided. Immaculate. KitchenWhile it is a small galley kitchen, it is totally complete, including a washer/dryer, sink (and undersink stocked with dish soap, laundry soap, various cleaning agents), stove, oven, microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker, stocked cupboard (spices, sugar, teas/coffee, rice, jam). Plenty of dishes, cups, glasses, wineglasses, silverware, utensils, pots/pans, even serving pieces). Everything is in excellent condition. For our stay, we didn't cook, but did eat breakfast in, enjoying the coffeemaker/hot tea and fresh croissants/fruits from nearby. Additionally, there is an iron/ironing board, umbrella, and slow cooker in the hallway closet across from the kitchen. Problems or BonusesWe cannot believe our good fortune to come upon this gem of a place. The owner also provides detailed instruction sheets on how to operate the various appliances and electronics in the apartment, which we considered a plus. Included are numbers where she may be reached, and also, an inventory sheet of everything in the apartment. Agency and Representatives (and price)We dealt directly with the owner. She answered all email correspondences in a timely manner, and directly and honestly. We never spoke with her until we arrived in Paris; her English was great. We never actually met her - and we really didn't need to. Everything was complete from start to finish. The apartment is accurately depicted on the website, although it seems even nicer and a little bigger in reality. We paid 790 euros for the week, with a 60 euro final cleaning fee. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others? We would not hesitate to stay here again. This place had it all, and the location was ideal. Price was right, too. Nothing fancy, we felt comfortable and at home for the week. Things to do in this areaWe spent a half day in Luxembourg Garden, which we found to be quite beautiful. Five minutes away is Boulevard Saint Germain. All the great little nooks and crannies of the 6th, and all its shops and places to eat.... Too numerous to list.... Explore....
