Review 2094: RentParis, Apt #7 (35 rue de Montmorency)

Review by Bill from US

1bed/1bath apartment, 3rd Arr., Paris

April 2006, 2 weeks

Great location in the Marais. Right next to the Centre Pompidou, near many fantastic restaurants and bars.

Nearby Amenities

Anything you need or want is within an easy walking distance.

The House/Apartment

The apartment is on the top (European 3rd) floor of a typical Paris building. There are probably 6-7 other private apartments in the building. The building was not in an extremely good shape, a bit below average for other nearby buildings.

Not applicable - this is a city-center apartment.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was in terrible shape. The sofa bed in the living room had an old, extremely uncomfortable mattress. The dining room table's glass top was cracked, the dining room chairs definitely were past their retirement age.

The apartment was absolutely filthy when we arrived. The person who met us tried to tell us everything was as expected, until we noticed and pointed out to him that the sheets on the bed were clearly not changed and the towels still damp (presumably from whoever used them that morning). The owners did have a cleaning crew arrive and clean the place in the evening, but this made for a rather unpleasant first afternoon in Paris. The owners also tried their best to make us feel like idiots for wanting a cleaning - at some point, one of the owners (his name was JP, I think) even told us to take our business elsewhere. If we had any options, we would have.

The bed in the bedroom was comfortable. The sofa bed in the living room was not comfortable at all.

The bathrooms were filthy. The shower drained was plugged, and it took three days for the owner to show up to try to fix it himself, and another two days to finally send in a plumber to fix it.

The kitchen was fine.

Problems or Bonuses

We have visited Paris every spring for the last seven years and have usually rented apartments (once before from the same agency). We rented this place after seeing the very positive review of it here: Review 1073

But the place clearly has deteriorated in the two years since that review was posted.

The biggest surprise was the amazingly negative attitude of the apartment owners (again completely opposite experience from what was posted before). They tried to make us feel like we are complete idiots after we complained about the filthy state of the apartment, the plugged shower, and the uncomfortable sofa.

We still made the best of the trip and enjoyed ourselves.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Our dealings with the agency started out very well. The reservation and payment process went very smoothly. There was a representative to greet us at the apartment (we speak French, so I don't know whether he spoke English).

But things deteriorated as soon as we noticed that the place had not been cleaned and the linens and the towels had not been changed. From then on, the owners clearly felt like they were doing us a favor by renting us their place. On several occassions, one of the owners told us to take our business elsewhere if we don't like the place as is.

The photos on their web site may have accurately represented the place a few years ago, but right now, the photos need to be "aged" quite a bit to give a clear picture.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would never stay here again. And I would never deal with this agency again.

There is another negative review of www.rentparis.com here: Review 1018. I wish I had followed their advice.

Things to do in this area

There are fantastic restaurants in this area. Le Hanger is a modern-ish French bistro (make reservations).

Not far is the Jewish area in heart of the Marais (Rue des Rosiers); there is a a fantastic falafel place there, called L'As du Falafel, much better than any of the other falafel places around.

The restaurant on top of Centre Pompidou (called George) is a great location (though the food is over-priced).
