Review 2141: Bercy House, Auriol
1bed/1bath apartment in 13th arrondissement, Paris
June 3, 5 minutes
The apartment is indeed right by the Seine, as advertised. The street it is on is not glamorous, but is active and generally fine. However, the building itself is next door to a boarded-up and graffiti-covered building with several homeless men drinking/ passed out at the doorstep - at noon! And the neighboring streets are quite sketchy-feeling; lots of young men loitering and drinking. I would definitely not have felt safe walking around alone here.
I noticed a grocery just across the street, and had a general impression of other neighborhood stores and restaurants nearby. But we didn't stick around long enough to get more familiar with the neighborhood, due to the state of the apartment.
The building was not too bad - reasonably modern and large, with two working elevators. Nothing charming, but serviceable.
The apartment was not in particularly good shape, but given the low price (relative to other Paris rentals, I think he was offering 2 1/2 weeks for 600e) we did not expect it to be great. It had not been very well cleaned, and the furniture was very worn (again, not surprising for the price).
This was the big problem: the owner advertised that the apartment has a queen-sized bed, when in fact it is a TWIN BED. It would be impossible for two people to stay in this apartment! Fortunately, we live nearby and were just coming by to check out the place. We were looking at renting a place in Paris because we live about an hour outside of the city - just a little too long to go in for the evening. We had always had a pied-a-terre in Paris, but it was sold a few months ago and we haven't rented another yet. We could we turn around and go home. But what a nightmare it would be for a couple arriving from abroad, with nowhere else to go!
I informed the owner that it is misleading to advertise the apartment as having a queen-size bed, but I see that in recent postings and on the above website he continues to do so. Therefore, I have to assume that he is deliberately deceiving would-be renters, knowing that once they arrive they will have difficulty finding other lodging.
Problems or Bonuses
The bed, the bed, the eensy-weensy one-person bed. And the bums outside the door.
