Review 2281: Le Clos de l'Abbaye, Rural Gite

Review by Sylvia from US

2bed/1bath gite in Saint Sernin du Plain, Burgundy

May 2006, 7 days

This wonderful gite (the owner also has several B&B rooms) is about 30 minutes from Beaune in the tiny village of Saint Sernin du Plain. The village restaurant (which is owned by the Le Clos' husband) is open on the weekends. You will need a car for this location, and there are day trips in all directions.

Nearby Amenities

The local restaurant, open on the weekend, is a three-minute walk. You can reach a nice grocery store in 15 minutes (Nolay) and Beaune is 30 minutes away.

The House/Apartment

If you are looking for a lovely place to stay while touring Burgundy (just 2+ hours from Paris), try the Le Clos de l’Abbaye (B&B and gite) in the tiny village of Saint Sernin Du Plain. We stayed a week in the two bedroom gite, which was beautifully restored. There are also several B&B bedrooms, which we did not see.

There was a terrace with table and four chairs across the street from the gite. The street was almost a dead-end with only one or two cars a day going by.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The gite was large, spotless and furnished beautifully. One bedroom had a king-sized bed and two twin beds, while the other bedroom had a double bed. The kitchen was the most well-equipped of any apartment kitchen we have every stayed in. One small drawback: the WC (separate from the bathroom) was on the ground floor, and the bedrooms were upstairs. The owner did mention she is thinking of putting in a toilet upstairs. There is a small living room, open to the dining area and kitchen, with a fireplace.

The owner, Veronique is charming and helpful. She speaks excellent English and will take you on guided wine-tastings with advance notice. Her husband operates the local restaurant, which is open on weekends (and is a three-minute walk from the B&B). The food there was excellent and it has a marvelous view.

The location is a little out of the way, which is why we adored it - but within 15 minutes, you can be at a good grocery store and within 30 minutes you can be in Beaune (which we found to be incredibly touristy). There are interesting day trips in all directions, We recommend you have a restaurant lunch, then buy pate, cheeses, roasted chicken, pastries, wine, etch for dinner, so you don’t have to drive back after dinner if you are there during the week.

Very comfortable, king sized bed in one bedroom.

Fabulous kitchen, best equipped in all of our travels.

The web-site is very accurate. Vero is charming and speaks very good English.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Would love to stay with Vero again any time. Amazing views from the terrace, some view from the living room of the B&B.
