Review 2340: Chantepierre, Charming House

Review by mk from CA

3bed/3bath house, St. Crépin-et-Carlucet near Sarlat, Aquitaine

September 2006, 1 week

This is a wonderful property located on several acres in the countryside. The owners, Jean and Nicole, are a warm and delightful couple, and their house is just adjacent. There are two other smaller rental properties, one of which we could see at a distance from the back of our house. We never felt our privacy intruded upon. After orienting us to the house and providing emergency contact information, Jean and Nicole left to visit their new grandchild in Bordeaux and returned later in the week. Chantepierre is located very near a well-known bed-and-breakfast in the area, Les Granges Hautes.

Nearby Amenities

Salignac-Eyvigues, 4 km away on a good, straight road, has the essentials, a supermarket, an ATM, and a small café, a good place for ice cream and a meal in a pinch. Salignac also has a small produce market in its square on Tuesday mornings. The best restaurant in the immediate area and one which we highly recommend is La Meynardie, an easy 10-15 minute drive from the house.

The House/Apartment

The house is, I believe, a restored barn, built by the owner's grandfather. It has been converted into a home of great taste, comfort, and charm. I am particular about my surroundings and I loved this house. The living/dining area, kitchen, and one bath are downstairs; the three bedrooms upstairs include the master bedroom with its ensuite bath and two secondary bedrooms. There is a shower room with a sink and a separate WC which are accessible off the hallway to both of these bedrooms. The kitchen was the most utilitarian room in the house, and it, too, had a lovely view of the countryside in the back of the house. There were both a washer and dryer located just off the kitchen.

The back of the house was shaded with lovely old trees, perfect for settling into the lounge chairs provided and reading or gazing out over the countryside. There was a pool complete with pool house which we never used.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Everything was in excellent condition. The furnishings were comfortable and more than adequate for our family of four; the housekeeping was to a high standard. There were a few English-speaking channels on the TV, mostly news.

The bedrooms were lovely, furnished in keeping with the rest of the house, and the beds were comfortable. The baths were modern and we never lacked for hot water.

We mostly used the kitchen for breakfast but did cook one pasta dinner. The kitchen was functional, roomy, and well-stocked, and it was easy for two people to work in it together.

Problems or Bonuses

The property is even better than it appears on the website.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

I dealt with Jean, the owner, through the web. He was very nice, and we had little difficulty communicating. The price for the week that we were there was 1900 euros. We signed a contract with a stipulated cancellation fee but were not required to pay a deposit before arrival; we paid in full at the end of our stay.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Would happily recommend to my most finicky friends.

Things to do in this area

Lacypierre, a little jewel of a 16th century chateau, is a five-minute walk up the road toward the tiny village of vieux St. Crépin. I went to three of the morning markets in the area, St. Geniès, Salignac, and the Wednesday market in Sarlat. My favorite was the Sunday morning market in St. Geniès which had a wide, but not overwhelming array, of produce, jams, honey, cheeses, sausages, and foie gras. St. Amand-de-Coly with its fortified church is also well worth a visit. The Moulin de la Tour is a good place to buy walnut products.
