Vacation rentals in France (farms, cottages, gites, apartments)
Review 2537: Owner, Les Gueninieres
3bed/2bath cottage near Pouzauges, Poitou
December 2006, one week
Having never stayed in the Vendee region of France before we were delighted with our choice of accommodation and it’s countryside location. The gite is situated on a working farm but is well away from any activity and apart from an occaisional moo, you actually forget it's there.
The very pretty three bedroom gite belongs to the Mayor of Chavagnes Les Redoux, which is a small village with tabac, hairdressers, mini market and is just a few kilometers from Pouzauges and only one hour from the coast. The famous Puy du Fou is 25 kilometers away.
The spacious and very well equipped gite has a large sitting room with beamed ceiling and exposed stonewall, a comfortable cottage suite, antique furniture and a dining table that seats six people compliment the room which opens onto an enclosed patio area which has a large table and six chairs. A television and telephone which accepts incoming calls are included.
It was a pleasure to cook in the very well equipped light and airy kitchen that has a table and six chairs, a cooker with oven, microwave, dishwasher and fridge with freezer and has a very good selection of cooking utensils and an abundance of crockery. You can access the patio through large patio doors, very handy in a summer. Leading from the kitchen is a very large utility room with a washer, ironing board, iron, barbeque is provided.
There is a double bedroom, a shower room with hairdryer and a separate toilet down stairs. Two further bedrooms are situated up stairs, one having a double bed and the other two single beds, upstairs there is also another large shower with toilet. The décor in all the rooms was very welcoming and fresh and all rooms had ample storage space.
The layout was especially good for two families or two couples wanting to have their own space. The outside area of the gite is very pretty and has a very large garden at the rear and a small enclosed garden behind the kitchen ideal for keeping young children safe. A carport that can double up as dining area, great for al fresco dining on hot summers days.
We paid an extra €10, which included all bed linen (the bed was made up for our arrival) bath towels, hand towels and tea towels.
For a week in high season the gite is €450 and €230 in low season. This gite is an absolute bargain.
The owner also has a Chambre d’hotes which is beautiful but certainly not intrusive and is totally separate from the gite which has its own drive. We took a tour of the Chambres d’hotes before we left so that we had a comparison of alternative accommodation/prices for any future visits to this region. It is a really well presented and homely house. The guests have use of a typical enormous French dining/sitting room with a beautiful floor to ceiling log-burning fireplace. There was a fridge, microwave and sink for guests’ use - great if you wanted to barbecue outside in the pretty garden in summer; outdoor tables and chairs are provided for guests also. The bedrooms were of a very good size. The family rooms were excellently designed like a small apartment with the bedrooms being self contained within their own unit, perfect for holiday makers with younger children. Each unit has its own shower room with the biggest shower cubicles I’ve ever seen plus a separate toilet. The rooms represent excellent value for money especially with the extra kitchen facilities that they provide.
