Review 2722: Owner, Boulevard Bourdon Apartment
2bed/1bath apartment in Marais, Paris
April 2007, one week
This spacious apartment is just south of Bastille, in the eastern part of the Marais close to the Seine. Pleasant area, out of the tourist crush yet close enough to walk to Notre Dame in 15 minutes. It's a three-minute walk to the Quai de Rapee Metro stop, and 5-7 walk to the Sully-Morland Metro, and about eight minutes to Bastille.
Unlike some other areas of Paris, there isn't a wealth of shops and restaurants right at your feet, but a few minutes gets you to anything you could want. There is a small fruit/veg/wine/sundries shop around the corner and down two blocks, a good boulangerie right around the corner, and a very good little bistro right around the corner. Other than that, it's an 8-10 minute walk up to rue St Antoine for the Monoprix, the cheese shop, butcher, greengrocer, more restaurants, etc. Great market just past Bastille on Thursday and Sunday mornings. There's a wheeled shopping cart in the apartment, which is great. It's perhaps a 10 minute walk to Place de Vosges.
The building is probably 150 years old, and in really excellent shape. You enter into a large entryway, and then go through another keyed entry to an elevator lobby. The apartment is on the third (European) floor, and there are two apartments on each floor.
There's a tiny balcony off the living room, just large enough for a chair or two. You look over busy Boulevard Bourdon and the boats in the Arsenal marina.
The lovely furniture was in excellent shape, very comfortable and tasteful. The whole apartment is beautiful, decorated in pretty colors and in an attractive style. In the living room is a sofa and two comfortable upholstered armchairs. There's a nice dining room (unheard of for Paris!) with wooden table and chairs for four, also a desk area if you bring your laptop.
Two large bedrooms, one with a fireplace. The bedrooms face onto an internal courtyard, so they're very quiet. Beds are very comfortable, and each room has an armoire for storage and dressers. The bathroom is very large, with sink, tub/shower, storage counter, and washer/dryer. There's a small toilet room next door. The tub/shower is a bit on the high side, so watch your step getting out.
The kitchen is narrow, but had just about anything we needed for cooking. Older, but in good shape. There's a full-sized fridge, enamel sink, four-burner stove, microwave, coffeepots, lots of cookware and dishes.
Problems or Bonuses
This apartment is huge! We're a family with two teen boys, and we had plenty of room for relaxing.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
The photos on the owner's website very accurately reflect the apartment. Eugene is very easy and informal to work with. After sending your final payment he will mail you the keys and apartment information.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I'd very happily stay here again. About the only things I'd want people to be aware of is that most shops and restaurants are a few blocks away; and the kitchen and bathroom are on the older side--but still perfectly good. It's a fabulous apartment!
Things to do in this area
It's Paris! Go explore! We found a good simple restaurant right around the corner-- La Canille, 4 rue Crillon. Many, many more in the Marais, and also good places further east into the 12th.
