Review 3021: Gîtes de France, Château de Montafilan (No 520316)

Review by Giny from Canada who is a SlowTrav Contributor

3bed/3bath house near Corseul, Brittany

Mid-October 2006, 1 week

This pretty three-story house is attached to the owner's house. The location is idyllic: A large estate at the end of a small country road, surrounded by Gallo-Roman fortifications, in well-groomed surroundings. All one hears is the chirping of the birds.

Nearby Amenities

Corseul, the closest village, is a five-minute drive from the house. It has a small grocery store, a restaurant, a hairdressing salon, and other services. The Corseul City Hall houses a museum showing an extensive collection of Gallo-Roman artifacts. Ruins of a Gallo-Roman temple are well preserved in the village.

Large supermarkets are found in Lamballe and Dinan, both a 20-minute drive from Corseul.

The House/Apartment

The three-storey stone building is historical. It has been well renovated. The bedrooms are spacious and bright. The bathrooms are modern. The small kitchen, dining-room and living-room are together on the main floor. A large wood fireplace is seen from all three areas. A door in the kitchen gives access to the garden and patio. The blue shutters against the grey stone of the house look very pretty.

You can view the house directly: Château de Montafilan.

The outside sitting area is very private. It is well furnished with a patio table, a parasol and chairs in excellent condition.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The living-room furniture is adequate and comfortable. The house, fridge and stove were very clean.

The bed in the master bedroom is firm and the bedsheets are clean and attractive (the two other bedrooms were not used).

The kitchen is quite small, which would make cooking for a family a bit difficult. The owner is well aware of this and plans to extend the area. There are plenty of pots, pans, dishes and cleaning agents.

Problems or Bonuses

The house and setting are prettier than shown in the pictures. There were no problems or surprises.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We booked through Gîtes de France. While we were satisfied with their services, we feel that dealing directly with the owner is often easier. The French owner of the house, who was on site, spoke English, Spanish and German. He was very pleasant, courteous and helpful. The rental for the second week of October was 360€.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I definitely recommend this rental. The location is great to visit Dinan, Cancale, Mont St-Michel, St-Malo, Dinard, and the many small villages along the Côte d'Armor.

Things to do in this area

The property was lovely and after a full day of sight-seeing, we were happy to return to the house, have an apéro outside, then dinner in front of the fireplace. Because we were there the second week of October, we expected some rain or cool weather. We had neither. It was warm and being off-season, we were able to visit Mont St-Michel without the usual crowds.
