Review 3108: Owner, Grand Apartment Overlookig the Gulf of St Tropez (# 89058)
2bed/2bath apartment just outside Ste. Maxime, Provence
September 2007, 1 week
This apartment is five minutes drive from the center of Ste. Maxime overlooking the Bay of St. Tropez. The location had a private, gated entrance with private parking on the property. It was a very nice area.
We chose to drive for groceries and morning coffee. It was about a 20 to 30 minute walk into the center of town. The big main grocery store was about 8 km but there was a smaller one about 4 km away. There were restaurants in the center of town which was only about 3 km.
The building is a listed historical house converted into about five apartments and is very well maintained. Our apartment had all the amenities, including air conditioning in the two bedrooms. The apartment was on the second level (with no elevator but this was not ever a problem) and there was a terrace across the entire apartment looking out at the Bay of St. Tropez. During our stay, there was only one other person staying in any of the apartments and she was on the ground level and we hardly even knew she was there.
The terrace across the length of the apartment was beautiful. We spent every morning and most evenings there watching the boats and the sun and moon on the bay. As well as the lights across the bay in St. Tropez. There was a shared pool for the building but we had it all to ourselves. There were grounds to walk in as well. On the terrace were very nice furniture, a table with chairs for four, two chaise and umbrellas to ward off the sun. At the pool there was furniture available so we could soak up the sun.
The furnishings were excellent. One of my main criteria is that I be able to read both in the living area and in the bedrooms and this apartment had lamps (with bright enough lights) for reading and comfortable seating. The apartment was exceptionally clean with tile floors, a full American style shower in one bathroom and a tub/shower in the other. The attention to detail in the decorating was lovely with beautiful glass art pieces. There was a dining table off the kitchen and a bar for sitting, eating and watching the cook!
The double bed in the main bedroom was good. And there were twin beds in the second bedroom. The linens were clean and of good quality. The bathrooms were huge and had plenty of room for all the needed bathroom items one travels with. The towels were thick and big enough to use and there were plenty of them.
The kitchen was compact but very usable. The dishes matched! The flatware was new and there was plenty of it. The cooking utensils were in good shape. We improvised for baking dishes, but perhaps most people don't actually bake while "slow traveling." We ate most of our evening meals in and had no problems with the items available in the apartment.
Problems or Bonuses
We had a problem with the washer/dryer. We couldn't get the door to close on it so we didn't use it. Apparently there is a trick to where to push to get it to close properly.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
We booked directly with the owner and she is a delight to work with. She has someone who met us when we arrived and when we left. Both the owner and the on site person spoke very good English. We had a telephone number for the on site person in case we needed anything. We didn't! The price was very reasonable compared to prices we have paid for other rentals in the South of France. The apartment was all it was promised and more!
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
We would stay here again in a minute. Our only wish is that there was Internet access in the apartment. I know, I know, it's slow travel, but my husband needed to stay in touch with his company in the States and the seven hour time difference and the hours of the local Internet cafe, left me sitting outside waiting on him while he tried to check in. (He could have done it in the middle of the night in France, while I was reading, if it had been in the apartment.) All in all, this is a great apartment.
Things to do in this area
We love the weekly local markets and went to the big one in St. Tropez (start early or take the ferry as it is crowded on the road there). There is quite a nice market in Ste. Maxime as well. For those who play golf there are some very nice golf courses in the area as well as magnificent beaches and all the water sports.
