Review 3132: Paris Bestlodge, Luxembourg Gardens

Review by lalabbott from NY

1bed/1bath apartment across from Luxembourg Gardens, Paris

Oct 07, 5 days

My mother and I stayed in Paris Bestlodge's apartment across from the Luxembourg Gardens. The apartment is located on Blvd St Michel. Location-wise, it is just okay. It is a bit of a walk up towards the river to the main area of the Left Bank and St Germain (10-15 minutes at a fast pace), but I might be spoiled because the last time I was in Paris, I stayed on Rue de Buci, in the heart of it all.

Nearby Amenities

Amenities are very convenient. Newsstand, ATM and crepe stand on the block. Tons of stores. The street is very commercial. The RER Luxembourg stop is close by but no other Metro stops are less than a 10-15 minute walk.

The House/Apartment

The building itself is old and elegant, with a pretty courtyard and the tiniest elevator I've ever seen. Two apartments per floor. I don't remember how many floors total, probably not more than six or seven. We could hear our upstairs neighbors occasionally and voices carry throughout the building, down the sweeping spiral staircase. I found the building itself very charming.

No garden or outside common area to sit. The apartment has a tiny balcony to stand on, but not big enough to sit. Allegedly, in the winter when the leaves are off the trees, you can see the Eiffel Tower from the balcony.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The apartment itself is pretty bare bones. Not much decoration, feels very empty. The furniture is a bit worn, one the of kitchen chairs had a rip on the cushion. I wasn't impressed with contents of the apartment, I wasn't expecting luxury but it was a little depressing. It wasn't dirty but it wasn't spotless either. The pictures on their website are accurate.

The bed in the bedroom was fine. Nice warm, silky comforter. The bedroom itself is tiny and very quiet, as it faces the courtyard. The sofa bed in the living room was super lumpy. The living room faces Blvd St Michel, so there is some traffic noise if you are using the sofa bed. I traveled with my mother, so one of us was sleeping on the sofa bed in the living room each night. Not noisy enough to keep me awake (although I live in NYC and am used to street noise).

The bathroom is small and there was no door on the shower for some unknown reason, which made showering a precarious affair with a wet bathroom floor at the end of the ordeal.

Kitchen was fine, bare bones again. No water glasses though, just wine glasses. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing. We only cooked one night because I wasn't keen on spending a ton of time in the apartment.

Problems or Bonuses

An old laptop is provided for email/Internet access which is a huge plus.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Thierry, the manager, is extremely helpful, friendly and responsive. We met the concierge who lives on the first floor to get the keys. She speaks no English. I speak a little French so we were able to get the gist of things from her (which apartment on the third floor was ours, not to open the laundry machine for five minutes after it's finished, etc.). Thierry came to meet us 45 minutes later and we paid the full rent in cash. 500 for four nights.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would recommend this apartment to those who don't care if the apartment and street they are staying on have a lot of charm, and just want a quiet place to sleep. I would not stay in this apartment again because I would prefer a better location and an apartment with a little more character and comfort. I booked only six months in advance, and many apartments were already rented, not to mention we were not there for a full week.

Things to do in this area

We didn't spend time in the neighborhood except to grab a drink at a cafe one night and do a little shopping at a wine shop and fromagerie a few blocks away.
