Review 3176: Owner, La Maupas

Review by AlanT from New Zealand

2bed/1bath house in Menerbes, Provence

July 2006, 2 weeks

La Maupas is located in Menerbes, Provence and is a three-level village house with two terraces giving views of the Petit Luberon and the village ruins. The house is up a small alleyway just off the main village access and is adjoined on three sides by other residences. Because the walls are about a metre thick there is total privacy. Menerbes is a small hilltop village in the Luberon Valley located about equidistant between Cavaillon to the west and Apt to the east.

Nearby Amenities

The village has three to four restaurants, a bar/cafe, charcuterie, epicerie and boulangerie along with a couple of caves with the nearest supermarket at Cavaillon approx 15 minutes away.

The House/Apartment

The whole village is medieval and a number of houses were undergoing restoration. Our house was in good shape with kitchen, bathroom & lounge on the ground floor, two bedrooms on second floor and the terrace on the third floor. The kitchen was typically rustic but with new appliances and a wood-burner installed in the kitchen fireplace.

No garden but two outside terraces that were private. No pool.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was relatively new and in very good shape. The house was clean and there was ample room to relax.

The bathroom also contained the laundry and the shower was over the bath.

The kitchen contained a gas hob (i.e., stove), good bench space and more than sufficient utensils etc.

Problems or Bonuses

There were no surprises. We came to France looking for realistic typical French village type accommodation and were prepared to rough it if necessary rather than take the usual tourist comforts and it was exactly what the doctor ordered.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We were able to deal directly with the owner as the accommodation was sourced off his own website. Peter was most helpful and dealing with him from NZ was not a problem. We paid 400 per week for two weeks and thought that it was very good value.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We would most definitely stay here again and have recommended it to friends. We know of one couple who have booked for 2008.

Things to do in this area

We used La Maupas as a base to explore Avignon, Pont du Gard, the local markets, Les Baux, Aix, Istres and the Gorge du Verdon. All of the markets were great but we found the best one was at Coustellet on Sunday mornings. Apart from Menerbes the other hilltop villages are worth exploring such as Gordes, Goult, Bonnieux, Lacoste & Oppede le Vieux. Gordes was too touristy and Goult was our favorite. You get fantastic views from the windmill and the local cafe serves ice creams and sorbet that are to die for. You can pick up plenty of local fruit from roadside stalls in between markets.
