Vacation rentals in France (farms, cottages, gites, apartments)
Review 3249: Welcome 2 France, Louvre Palais Royal II
1bed/1bath apartment in 1st arrondissement, Paris
December 9, 2007, 3 nights
Easy walk and great location to several restaurants and groceries. Keep in mind most groceries are closed Sunday.
The building was okay. The entrance was execrable, but the apartment was well furnished. Issues arose as we discovered that the bath didn't work and there was no hot water for two of the three days we were there.
You can view the apartment directly: Louvre Palais Royal II.
The furniture was in good shape and comfortable. The apartment was clean.
The beds were fine but there were hot water issues and the bath did not work. We were subsequently told to fill the bath via the shower hose. I thought perhaps they should fix the bath.
I think it would have been a usable. We were not there long enough to fully test.
Problems or Bonuses
Non-working tub. Execrable entrance. No hot water.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
We paid €550 Euros for three nights. The facade was nice, the reality less so.
On the other hand, booking through an online group was a leap of faith. The apartment did exist.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
A cautionary tale:
We had a somewhat disappointing experience. While the apartment was lovely, we had tepid water for showers midday, the tub didn't work, the hair dryer if on high would shut off after under a minute. In addition, the lobby of the building was terrible in that it had plaster falling off the walls and reminded us of a squatters building. As we alone carried too much luggage (our fault for over packing) up to what was promised to be the second (American third) floor we found that it was in fact an additional floor up. The ladies who "checked us in" were lovely but did not offer to help -- nor did we think it appropriate to ask them to for various reasons.
In addition the transaction was anything but smooth, including changing rates (improperly calculated as well as a result of poor contract drafting and exchange rates), forms filled out on the website (as requested by the company) that didn't make it to the party responsible for fulfilling the request, and contact numbers (cell phones) that are blocked from the apartment phone.
The good news is that the apartment was lovely and there (i.e. no obvious scam) but the bad news is that this is our first experience in home/apartment renting that fell far short of what was promised/expected.
Recommend that you ask many questions before booking and get everything in writing. I have had extraordinary good luck booking houses (in other locations) through another group of unaffiliated owners found at VRBO.com.
However, given the owners are unaffiliated that may be just luck. So far we have been blown away by four rentals through the website.

This is Paris after all.
