4bed/2bath house near Sarlat, Aquitaine WhenSeptember 2007, One week LocationThis is a wonderful property located near the Vezere River in the Perigord Noir region (Dordogne). This is a wonderful country setting with numerous villages located nearby including Thonac and Saint Leone as well as the larger town of Montignac. Nearby AmenitiesThonac is located approximately 1km away and has a good restaurant, a snack bar, and a small convenience size grocery good for essentials (and a bottle of wine). A full service grocery is located another 4-5km away near Montignac where there are numerous restaurants, a post office, and lovely shops. The House/ApartmentThe property is an extremely well renovated mill that has been part of the current owners family for generations. The owners were glad to share this rich history upon arrival and their care was clearly evident in the quality of the restoration of the mill. The construction included the traditional materials of the area including the lauze stone roof and the solid stone walls. GardenThe property is completely private surrounded by fields and apple trees. A ping pong table is located in back yard as well as a table suitable for dinners outside. A stream meanders across the property providing a relaxing place to rest. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasThe mill was in impeccable condition looking newly renovated with comfortable furniture and a more than enough space for our family of five, including our one year old. Bedrooms/BathroomsThe bedrooms were spacious with very comfortable beds. The bathrooms were beautiful and well appointed. KitchenThe large kitchen and dining room were located in what used to be the primary operating part of the mill and still had a stone bakery oven and a millstone. However, it was fully equipped with new modern appliances and well stocked with pots, pans, dishes, and other accessories. Problems or BonusesEven though I had read other reviews, our party was stunned by the size and condition of the property. We got much more that expected for our money. Agency and Representatives (and price)We corresponded via email with the owner's daughter and her husband when making reservations and in getting recommendations for transportation to the property. They were extremely helpful, especially in accommodating our toddler. Upon arrival the owners were waiting for us and showed us around the property. The time we spent talking to them was one of the highlights of our trips. They could not have been more welcoming, and were wonderful people. We paid €1000 for the week and felt that it was an incredible bargain. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others? The rental far exceeded all of our expectations and represents a tremendous value. I can't recommend it highly enough. We hope to go back again one day. Things to do in this areaWe explored local villages, visited the Lascaux caves near Montignac, made a day trip to Sarlat for the market, took a canoe trip down the Vezere, and ate like kings at the restaurant Laborderie located in nearby Tamnies (beautiful at sunset).
