studio apartment in 5th arrondissement, Paris

When

February 15-21, 2008, six nights

Location

This apartment is located on a very quite street in the 5th between Rue Moufftard and the Roman Arena. It is just off of Rue Monge near many shops and restaurants.

Nearby Amenities

It was so easy to find all that we needed nearby. There are two supermarkets and numerous smaller stores within a five minute walk.

The House/Apartment

The apartment is in very good shape. The owners have done a great job fixing it up. It is in a very quite building on a very quite street. It is even more quite due to the fact that it is on the backside of the building and separated from the street by a courtyard and part of the building. The only noise we ever heard was the neighbor leaving her apartment.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The apartment is small. The door opens into the living room/bedroom, which is probably 12'x12'. It contains the fold out couch, a small table and chairs in the pics on the website, a small cabinet that holds glasses, and a small set of drawers that holds electrical converters/adapters. The small flat panel TV is on the wall opposite the couch and has four English language news channels and numerous other channels. We did not really use the TV other than to keep up with Clinton and Obama.

The dressing room includes an armoire with plenty of space to hang clothes and shelves for tee shirts, socks, etc. There is also a small desk for the laptop (provided by the owners with wifi; it works very well, but slow) and two bookshelves with a number of guidebooks, maps, etc. The phone comes with free long distance to the US and Canada, and the owners provide two cell phones. All you need to do is buy minutes for the cell phones, which means that you do not have to rent cell phones and families can split up for a day and still stay in touch. I think it is wonderful that we did not have to rent cell phones and had a laptop with free Internet.

The apartment includes a drying rack for clothes, baskets for going to the market (open until 7:30 on Friday in Place Monge), and any number of little things that will make the stay easier. I really liked the location. Being near Moufftard, it is near numerous schools which keep the area alive. At the same time, there were many times we would be walking to and from the apartment and we would not hear or see another tourist. Rue Monge is full of shops. You should be able to find anything you need within a three or four minute walk in either direction on Rue Monge.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

The bathroom is large by European standards. The bathtub is deep, but not long. The shower works well. The water pressure and temperature were perfect and easily adjustable. The bathroom was stocked with soaps, lotions, shampoos, etc. There were even slippers to guard against the cold floor (which was cold due to no downstairs neighbor and thus no heat coming from below).

Kitchen

The kitchen is very small, the size of a small closet. It includes a microwave/roaster/steamer, two gas burners, a small refrigerator, and small sink. It is well stocked with the basics. We did not cook there one time, but I think we would have been fine cooking a small, uncomplicated meal there.

Problems or Bonuses

Overall, it was a good apartment and someplace I would recommend to any couple or group of three. There are some negatives. First, when you unfold the couch, the entrance to the bathroom is slightly obstructed. The result is that you trip over the couch going in and out of the bathroom if you are not paying attention. Similarly, when the second bed is folded out in the dressing room, I do not think you will be able to access the armoire. Also, do not count on much privacy. That is probably why this is good for a family of three or just a couple.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Sandy and Philipe, the owners, met us the day we arrived and greeted us with a basket that included fresh croissants, a fresh small baguette, candy, and wine. The refrigerator was stocked with water, orange juice, and some cheese. They demonstrated how things in the apartment worked, and left us after about fifteen minutes. We later met them for a drink and enjoyed an 1.5 hour visit with them. They are wonderful people.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would definitely recommend this rental to others. It is at the top of our list for rentals in Paris based on location and price.
