Review 3383: Paris Attitude, Ile de la Cite (#1091)

Review by Perpetual Traveler from VA

2bed/1bath apartment in 4th arrondissement, Paris

March 23 - April 1, 2007, 1 week

This rental is located directly off of Rue d'Arcole across from the hospital on Ile de la Cite. It is within easy walking distance of Les Halles, Notre Dame, Ile St Louis, the 5th and 6th arrondissement.

Nearby Amenities

Grocery shopping is as easy as walking into the 6th along Rue Monge where there are chain supermarches and individual stores. Cafes and restaurants on Ile St. Louis, as well as those along the river in the 5th and 6th, are less than 10 minute walk away. The Place Monge marche is a 10-15 minute walk away on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday mornings.

The House/Apartment

The building entrance is off of Rue d'Arcole next to the cafe owned by the same owner as the apartment. The apartment is located on the fourth floor. There is a very small elevator that fits one person but it was convenient for sending the luggage up while climbing the stairs upon arrival. There are usually two apartments per floor. On the same floor as the rental, there was only one other apartment that was privately owned. The owner of the rental lives on the second floor. Overall, the building was in good condition with suitable lighting and fixtures.

There is no outside sitting area for this apartment.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

This is a very comfortable apartment. There are four bar stools for sitting at the kitchen for meals. The main sitting in the living room area is a futon which can be used for a guest in addition to the two bedrooms. The apartment is very well kept and in good condition, cleaned between each rental. There are plank hardwood floors in all areas and tile floor in the bathroom. There are minor architectural details in each room and original (now non-working) fireplaces in the bedrooms.

Each of the two bedrooms has a full size bed. The mattresses are soft and the frames in good condition. The bedrooms are spacious with plenty of room for people, luggage, and bed without climbing over anyone or anything to move around the rooms. Each bedroom has large windows opening out over Rue d'Arcole providing lots of natural light and a breath of fresh air when desired. There is a single bathroom off the main hall. It, like the bedrooms is spacious with a high ceiling. The hot water for the bathroom is controllable from the kitchen water heater.

The kitchen appears to be the most recently renovated of all the rooms and was probably finished in the last five years as of the time of the stay. It is equipped with a variety of pots and pans, a four burner glass top stove, an oven, and a microwave. There are enough serving dishes and utensils for at least four people to enjoy a complete meal. The owner does keep shelf stable groceries between renters so there are even basic ingredients and condiments on hand upon arrival.

Problems or Bonuses

This apartment was surprisingly quiet overall. We were frequently out during the day between 10am and returning at 5pm. Outside of these hours, most tourists visiting the island have returned to their own accommodations and there is no noise associated with the hospital across the street. The most pleasant sound was the chiming of Notre Dame's bells throughout the day. There is little to no traffic noise on the island and the apartment is located several floors above the street, making pedestrian traffic muted at best.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The agency could not have made the process simpler. Upon our reservation request, we were immediately assigned an agent who processed our paperwork and was available by email or phone. All business was conducted by email and fax with very prompt answers to our questions. The agent spoke English. The on site person is the owner of the apartment. The owner speaks some English and fluent French. Since they live on the second floor and own the cafe on the first floor, the owner was always available to answer questions or provide assistance. The description of the apartment was accurate and complete.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Our party was a couple and an additional person. The arrangement of the apartment allowed for privacy and the ability to socialize on a regular basis. This apartment would be best for a similar travel party or two couples sharing an apartment. We would stay here again in a similar situation and recommend it to others traveling in parties of 3-4 people.

Things to do in this area

This apartment's location made it ideal for morning walks along the banks of the river and exploring the adjacent Ile St. Louis. Central to several Metro lines, we used it as a base for a variety of activities around downtown Paris. Those interested in fabric crafts will be interested in Le Rouvray, a quilting store located on Rue de la Būcherie.
