Review 3601: Chateau de la Vauguyon, Gite 01
2bed/1bath gite near Chinion, Loire Valley
May 2005, 1 week
The Chateau is located 5k or so south of Chinion and very easy to find - its 1st gite is a Pigeoneer within the grounds of the Chateau. A 2nd gite is now available within the Chateau.
It is a lovely location with quite a few hectares to explore with a lovely deer herd and woods. It is very private. Chinion is a lovely town with all the needed amenities such as ATM, grocery stores, gas, Internet, restaurants and plenty of history with the old chateau where Joan d'Arc resided, Robelaise, etc etc
We were able to do easy day trips to many of the famous and not so famous Loire Chateaus and other historic sites; this is a great central location to the Loire region.
We had a very short and easy drive to get groceries, boulangerie, wineries, and we even bought fresh white asparagus from farmers right across the road.
The chateau dates back to the 13th century. The pigeoneer gite was in very good shape with nice private grounds to sit outside and relax. Being a round building was interesting as to its restoration which was quite nice.
Since we stayed there, the owner has remodeled inside the chateau for another gite which looks larger than the Pigeoneer and very nice.
The chateau is very interesting and historic which the owner is glad to share with anyone as well as touring the grounds.
There is ample sitting areas throughout the chateau with lovely gardens.
There is no pool.
The gite was well furnished and clean. The bedrooms were very large and comfortable as was the living room which had a nice fire place for cool evenings.
The beds were of good size and comfortable with nice dressers.
The bath was of nice size and well equipped with tub and shower combo and sink. There was a wash machine also in the bathroom with a clothes line outside.
The kitchen was small but very well equipped with stove, refrigerator, dishes, supplies, etc. Full meals could easily be prepared in the kitchen.
Problems or Bonuses
The owner, Celian, speaks very good English and goes out of his way to provide a quality experience for any guest. He took us to two of his favorite wineries to taste and buy good wines and had a wealth of information for restaurants to try and sites to see.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
We worked directly with Celian who lives on site and he was very good to work with and very flexible. I had trouble with my credit card (missing chip) to buy gas at certain stations and he even offered to let us use his if we couldn't find an attendant station.
Based on other gites we have rented (seven others), we feel the rental cost is quite reasonable for this historic site and services offered by Celian.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
We certainly would as it is a lovely site, a great owner and the Loire is full of great treasures to visit.
Things to do in this area
We love chateaus and the Loire is most famous for all the chateaus located there. There are many not in the tour books that are good as well to explore. The restaurants are many and varied in their cuisine throughout the region. Many vineyards are available to visit to taste the famous chenin blanc whites and cab franc reds that are quite good and reasonable in price.
We very much enjoyed the Loire region which we coupled with another week after in the Normandy region for a great two week trip.
