Review 3775: Dijon Rent a Home, Berbisey

Review by laura anne from NY

1bed/1bath apartment in Dijon, Burgundy

August 2008, 10 days

This apartment is near the center of Dijon, the second (top) floor of an 17th century mansion. The ground and first floors are occupied by locals, and there's a beautiful private courtyard outside.

The apartment is 'under-eaves,' so I might hesitate recommending it for anyone taller than 5'10", and there is no elevator, but the apartment itself was wonderfully comfortable and well-equipped (the owner even left coffee and tea for me, so I didn't have to hit the stores right away). A queen-sized bed, full kitchenette (including washer/dryer) and an updated shower made it the perfect place to relax after a long day out.

It is not handicapped-friendly -- in addition to the staircase, the apartment itself is has steps from the entrance to the main floor, and then down again into the bedroom area.

Nearby Amenities

You could walk to everything, including the train station (15 minute walk, even with luggage)! The nearest supermarket was around the corner, the tourist office was a five minute walk, and cafes and restaurants everywhere. Perfect placement.

The House/Apartment

The building was from the 17th century -- it as very well maintained and the bathroom and kitchen were in excellent shape. There are two other apartments in the building, owned by locals.

Outside the building there is a private courtyard with a table and chairs. It is, technically, shared, but I never encountered anyone when I was out there.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was good-rental quality -- nothing you worried about damaging, but all sturdy and comfortable.

The bed was very comfortable, although the light switches were a little difficult to reach, if you read before bed. The only complaint with the bathroom was that it was a bit cramped, but the owner stocked it with not only the essentials but extras like mouthwash, shaving cream, a throw-away razor, nail polish remover ... all the things you might suddenly need but not want to buy for one use. A very nice touch.

The kitchen was galley-small but for 1-2 people it was fine. Very much a vacation kitchen -- an odd assortment of pots, pans and dishes, but the dishwasher worked, the fridge was good-sized, and there was a coffee maker and an electric tea-kettle.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

I cannot say enough good things about Beatrice. The pre-arrival discussion went smoothly, her directions were excellent, and when I arrived, my name was on the doorbell so I knew I'd gotten to the right place -- no hesitation about "where do I ring?"

She speaks excellent English, and was delightful in person. The apartment itself was exactly as pictured.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would stay here -- or any of her other properties -- the next time I was in Dijon, absolutely.
