Review 3826: Paris Bestlodge, Crazyview

Review by lilaki from Canada

1bed/1bath apartment in 4th arrondissement, Paris

September 2008, 7 nights

The apartment is located at 17 Quai aux Fleurs on Ile de la Cite. The unit is on the fourth floor of the building. There are 63 stairs from the ground floor entrance. There is no elevator.

Nearby Amenities

There is a small convenience store on the street behind the apartment building. We usually went to the grocery stores (Franprix, Monoprix) on the Left Bank ... maybe a 5-10 minute walk away. Same for boulangeries and patisseries.

There were cafes and restaurants a few minute walk away.

Cite metro station is about a five-minute walk away.

Ile St. Louis is just a few minutes away.

The House/Apartment

The building was historical and perhaps a little run down. There is a small-ish circular staircase and it appeared that some renovation was either going on or about to happen as some of the walls in the stairwells were busted open to expose the wooden beams.

The apartment was newly renovated with modern decor. As soon as you open the door, you are in the living room/dining room/kitchen. There is a tiny bathroom (renovated) to the right and the bedroom is to the left. There are three windows which all open up onto the Seine and the Right Bank.

The apartment is nearby to Hotel Dieu and the police headquarters - so there were lots of sirens all day/night (we’re so tired that we don’t care at night), and there were numerous Bateaux Mouches floating by and blaring their speakers/lights at the apartment (again, tired at night so we didn’t care).

The photos on the website are spot on. Although, the description states that four people can be accommodated - I’m not so sure about that one. With two of us, the place is definitely small. Not sure if I would stay here with two other people (even if they were kids).

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The apartment was very clean. We did not see any rodents or insects.

A vacuum cleaner is provided and we used that occasionally.

There were four chairs around the dining table and the sofa could comfortably seat two adults. I believe the sofa also converts to a sofa-bed.

The bed was very comfortable. The linens and towels were of good quality.

The bedroom is quite small - it was maybe 12 inches wider than the entire bed.

There is a closet in the bedroom which is not shown in the pictures.

The bathroom is newly renovated (like the rest of the apartment) but VERY small.

The apartment came very well-stocked. Dish soap, laundry detergent, dishwasher detergent, and even hand-soap. Toilet paper and paper towels were also supplied. Only one frying pan, one small sauce pan, one knife, one small cutting board, one spatula. Definitely not a place to make gourmet meals. Small bar-sized fridge - no freezer.

Problems or Bonuses

We loved...

  • Free Internet access (bring your own laptop)
  • Free local phone
  • Free satellite TV (maybe 10 English-speaking channels)
  • Comfy bed and couch

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Thierry was very easy to deal with. He always replied promptly to e-mails. There is an electronic keypad outside the building and lock-box outside the apartment and he sends you instructions on how to let yourself in. Thierry showed up about an hour after we arrived to show us how to use the dishwasher, washer/dryer, TV, Internet, etc. We called him twice during our stay - once when our cable seemed to fizzle out and once when the recommended taxi company was not able to send a cab for us. Thierry showed up once during the week - to drop off some clean linens. But otherwise, he left us pretty much to our own devices. If you’re a traveller that requires more hands-on attention, then this may not be the place for you.

The price (€800 for the week) seemed very reasonable when compared to other Paris apartment rentals.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We loved this apartment. We would definitely recommend this property to others.

The fourth-floor walk-up was not a problem for us (63 winding stairs in total). We had two fairly large suitcases but we managed to bring them up and down without a hitch.

Now that we’re familiar with Paris, I think we will try one of Thierry’s left-bank properties next time. We loved our little apartment but it would have been even more perfect if we had a Boulanger right outside our door. But maybe that was a good thing! We probably ate way more than we needed to during our trip! I would definitely rent from Thierry again.

Things to do in this area

  • Ice cream and crepes on Ile St. Louis
  • Notre Dame, Saint Chapelle, Conciergerie all within a 5-10 minute walk
  • Marche Maubert - 10 minutes away
