Review 3842: Provence West, Lis Oulivie/Le Paradou

Review by Julie Rouleau from Québec

2bed/2bath cottage near Fontvieille, Provence

October 4-11 2008, 7 days

The rental was located near the town of Fontvieille, about a 45min drive southeast from Avignon. A small town with all the amenities, a post office, a supermarket and a few restaurants. The area is gorgeous, on a 55 acres olive grove. They also have a few animals, rooster, chickens, ducks and the nicest dog!! The 200 year old house is the only one on this property. The owners live upstairs and rent two apartments on the ground level. The grounds are immaculate.

Nearby Amenities

You absolutely need a car if you are going to stay at this property. Fontvieille is about a five minute drive and so is Paradou.

The House/Apartment

The house itself is 200 years old and was entirely renovated. We stayed on the ground floor. You can walk into the house from both the front and the back. Entering from the back there is a large living room with terra cotta ceramics on the floor. Beams on the ceiling and a stone wall. The kitchen and living room are one big open space. There is a working fireplace in the living room and the kitchen is quite big with washing machine and a full size refrigerator. There is also a laundry room that opens onto the kitchen with a washing basin, and both a washer and dryer. There is a door in the kitchen that opens to the front of the house where a nice patio table is set. Bedrooms are at the end of a corridor that opens to the living room. One bedroom with two twin size beds and a private bathroom and the master bedroom with queen size bed and also a private bathroom. Both bathrooms have a huge Italian shower and the toilet is separated from the shower area. There are French doors in the master bedroom that opens to the back of the house.

You can view the property directly at Lis Oulivie.

The gardens are immaculate. There is another apartment that is also for rent but was not occupied when we were there. The house is on an olive grove and the owners also have a few pets: rooster, ducks, chicken and a dog. At the back of the house there is a nice sitting area with lounge chairs that everybody is free to use and at the front both rentals have their own private patio with dining table. There is a BBQ that we could use and lots of wood for use with the fireplace.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

All furniture were in excellent condition, outside chairs had seat cushion. The house was sparkling clean.

The master bedroom had a nice stone wall and the bed was amazingly comfortable!! Once the shutters were closed for the night you could not tell if your eyes were open or closed!!! There were 2 bathrooms, both with the toilets outside the main bathroom area. Excellent water pressure in the showers and enough hot water for both of us.

Kitchen was big with excellent appliances, a big full size fridge!! Enough dishes and cooking tools for everything we needed.

Problems or Bonuses

This villa exceeded our expectations ... THAT was an amazing surprise!!! It felt like we had just walked into a magazine!!!!

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We booked with Provence West and dealt with Marguerite. She was very useful with all our questions and also made nice dinner recommendations in nearby towns. We paid $1900 for the week during the low season. Pierre and Elisabeth, the owners, were the nicest ... I cannot comment on their English as my mother tongue is French, so we spoke French ... but Marguerite told me they were fluent in English. Photos of the property on Provencewest.com did justice to the place, we were not disappointed!

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

YES! We are already looking into our next visit!

Things to do in this area

The area is close to everything ... we spent one day in Cassis, one day in St-Rémy-de-Provence and Les Beaux. One day in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and one day in the Camargue Region. Marguerite recommended a restaurant in Mollégèse called Mas du Capoun; it was amazing and only a 30 minute drive.
