Vacation rentals in France (farms, cottages, gites, apartments)
Review 3860: France for Rent, MA103 - Bourg
1bed/1bath apartment in the Marais, Paris
September 2008, 10 days
The apartment was very centrally located between the Jewish quarter and the gay district on good bus routes and just five minutes from the river. There is a price to pay for that because it is on a very narrow street, lined with trendy shops and bars, which means that it is very noisy at night and early morning.
There is a busy mini-supermarket almost directly opposite the apartment. This is convenient but also means there is loads of pedestrian traffic and beggars not to mention early morning rubbish collections and delivery trucks.
The apartment was very historic. Its on the first floor up a narrow windy staircase. It was also very dark and airless. You couldn't open the windows because of the street noise and the air-conditioning unit was also historic/rattled so much and dripped water we were afraid to use it.
The furniture was repro antique and served its purpose. It was cosy at night with lots of subdued lighting and candles.
The bed was surprisingly comfortable but the bathroom was small, dark with no ventilation. We also were very surprised that there was a huge hole smashed into the tiled side of the bath. No explanation given so we sent a photograph to the US agent.
The kitchen was very dark because most of the lights didn't work and when we tried to replace bulbs we were surprised to find that they were not very securely fixed. Otherwise the kitchen was reasonably kitted out although very few glasses or cups and the fridge had not been defrosted for a decade. We cooked almost everyday, shopping at local markets and shops for superb ingredients.
Problems or Bonuses
Apart from the frightening electrics, the hole in the bathroom tiling, I wasn't terribly impressed when I stood on a half dead cockroach on the second morning.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
The agent in San Francisco was fantastic, always very prompt and polite. On the other hand the on site representative was more interested in selling us expensive tourist tours in Paris than telling us anything about the apartment or the locality. This only mattered when we took three days to figure out how to use the TV.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
Although the district was fabulous and we would really recommend apartment living as a way to appreciate Paris we would not choose this apartment again because we would prefer a quieter base.
Things to do in this area
Amazing Jewish delis, bakeries and takeaways in the nearby streets. Fabulous cafes and bars. It is an amazing part of Paris and so central we could walk or bus to almost everywhere. We had a fabulous holiday for all the faults with the apartment.
