apartments on an estate near Baufort en Vallee & Saumur, Loire Valley WhenMay 2009, one week LocationThe accommodation is at the edge of a tiny village about 10 minutes drive from Beaufort en Vallee and about 25 minutes from Saumur and Angers. The location was beautiful and very peaceful and well kept comprising a large, landscaped garden with several cottages and the pressoir building as well as the owners' own accommodation. Nearby AmenitiesThere was a bakery and a small bar in the village but we drove about five minutes to the nearby supermarket for our shopping and also used the local, roving, markets. I believe there is one restaurant in the village which is open only for lunch. The House/ApartmentThe unit we stayed in, Le Pressoir (3bed/3bath), was a historical wine press converted into accommodation. Having been recently converted, the unit was in very good condition and, set away from the other units, very private and quiet though the whole 'estate' was quiet. The accommodation was set out with the three en-suite bedrooms -- one king(US queen) one double and one twin -- all on the ground floor, this keeps the bedrooms very cool if it's hot out. The upstairs contained the living room/kitchen/dining area and lead out onto a large, shady deck. I could imagine that the upstairs would be rather warm in summer with the sun coming through the windows but the deck was pleasant and cool under the trees. There is a washing machine on-site for communal use. GardenThere was a large, upstairs deck with table and chairs and also a sitting area with table and chairs downstairs. There was also a large, gas barbecue for exclusive use of the unit. There was a nice pool area with lounge chairs but we didn't use it. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasAll the furniture was in good condition and comfortable. The unit was very clean and well kept. We were four and there was ample indoor and seating for six. The living room contained two couches and one arm chair which were all comfortable. Bedrooms/BathroomsI believe we all found our beds comfortable. As the bedrooms were downstairs, and surrounded by trees they were rather dark, the rear/master bedroom being quite dark though this suited me fine. The master bathroom consisted of a large room with shower over bath. The other two rooms each had a shower room, one of which seemed to be a wet-room, we didn't utilize this room. KitchenThe kitchen was done in a 'French country' style and contained all the necessary equipment for cooking. We prepared our own meals every day and, though simple, we managed just fine. A very large cooking pot is available for the cooking of mussels or other large items such as artichokes. Problems or BonusesI think any surprises were good. We were more than pleased with the quality of the unit and the quietude and prettiness of the grounds and surrounding area. Agency and Representatives (and price)The owners, Lisa and Mark, were always available and more than willing to help with one's needs. Lisa was always very prompt in replying to emails and queries before we arrived. They are both British so there was no language barrier. We paid just under €1000 for one week in late May. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?Absolutely would recommend to friends! Things to do in this areaBackground: we are two 'middle' aged couples! Lots to see and do in the area: many castles such as at Saumur; Angers, also wonderful tapestries in the castle; Villandry, lovely castle and fantastic gardens; in late spring/summer, the Chemin de la Rose garden with 13,000 rose bushes; Usse, Sleeping Beauty's castle was terribly hokey but, for us, almost worth the €13 admission for the laughs it gave us. The troglodyte village museum; several churches; lots of pretty villages. Shopping at local markets; cheap wine from the supermarkets; better wine from wineries.
