Review 421: La Prairie in France, Les Rosiers
4bed/2.5bath house in Domme, Dordogne, Aquitaine
October 2002, 1 week
This house is in the small town of Domme, abutting the ancient village walls with a beautiful view across the valley. There are houses on either side, but the house offers total privacy in the backyard/pool area.
The nearest restaurants and grocery-shopping were a 5-minute walk, with larger shops a 5-minute drive down the hill.
The building itself partially dates from the 1500s and has been modernised in excellent taste.
The backyard has a small pool, nice lounge chairs, and is totally private.
The furniture is in great shape -- very comfortable with ample seating (2 full sofas) in the living room, a table for 8 in the dining area, and lots of room/seating on the outside deck overlooking the pool.
The beds are very comfortable, with good mattresses, and the baths are extremely nice. The master bedroom is downstairs (with a canopy bed), and the master bath has a large, modern shower stall. The second double bedroom is upstairs, and its bath has a tub with shower attachment. There is also a half bath by the dining area. It's a perfect house for 2 couples, or 2 couples with children, since one small bedroom has 2 twins which can't joined, and another small bedroom adjoins the upstairs double bedroom.
The kitchen is extraordinary, very large with loads of counter space and everything of fine quality. The dining table seating 8 is adjacent, and just out the kitchen door is the deck overlooking the pool and valley below, with its own table and chairs.
Problems or Bonuses
The only surprise was the spaciousness of the house and the quality -- when my friend and I walked in, we literally starting yelling with joy. Of course, as the English owner said, we Americans are a noisy lot!
Agency and Representatives (and price)
We booked with the owners via telephone, although e-mail is now available. The owners, who are English, live nearby and are terrific. He came by just to change a light bulb we couldn't reach because of its height, although we assured him it wasn't necessary. They're also eager to help with restaurant reservations if necessary (i.e., if you don't speak French), and left wine, coffee, and homemade jam to greet us. The web site offers an accurate view of Les Rosiers, but the reality is even better!
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
We plan to return, and would recommend this to our best friends (who in fact stayed here with us and loved it as much as we did). My only qualification: come off-season, as we did. The crowds have disappeared, and the price is 1/3 that of the summer. Plus, autumn offers truffles, cepes (the French name for porcini), and wild game dishes!
Things to do in this area
Domme is in the heart of the Perigord, or Dordogne as the English call it. It's a jewel of a town itself, and is near Sarlat, one of the most beautiful towns in France, la Roque-Gageac, Beynac, etc. etc. etc. This is our second time in the area, and we hope to return. We had a wonderful dinner at L'Esplanade in Domme to celebrate my birthday, and ate as well though less expensively at La Belle Etoile in la Roque-Gageac (a superb 3-course dinner for $20, and an even better 4-course dinner for $30). In addition to eating, there are castles everywhere, caves with prehistoric paintings, canoeing and kayaking on the Dordogne River, small towns with great markets to buy your fixings for dinner -- our favorite part of France!
