1bed/1bath apartment in 10th arrondissement, Paris

When

10-20 September 2009, 10 nights

Location

The Magenta apartment is ideally located in the 10th arrondissement, steps away from a Metro line and bus stop. There are shops, bakeries, cafes, and pharmacies all within a one-block radius.

Nearby Amenities

The neighborhood proved ideal. The Metro stop was steps away and every imaginable shop, bakery, and restaurant was within a one-block radius. We enjoyed exploring our own neighborhood almost as much as we enjoyed discovering the more touristy places in Paris. Everything we needed from a morning croissant to groceries was close, within a few yards of the front door of the apartment building.

The House/Apartment

Our Magenta apartment, rented from a private consortium of owners in Paris named Beau Paris, was a wonderful find. It is on the top floor of a lovely old building. There's a tiny elevator, and it has views out over the Paris rooftops.

The thirty photos, which accompanied the text describing the property showed us exactly what we were renting, and Phillipe, the owner, was a pleasure to work with. The price could not be beat at 660 for ten nights.

We discovered, upon our arrival, that the apartment was even better than we anticipated. Three huge windows opened onto tiny balconies so the apartment was flooded with sunshine. Every amenity imaginable, from a "free" computer in the study/bedroom to umbrellas waiting in a stand by the front door was provided. There was even a scale in the bathroom so we could track our weight loss after seven hours a day of walking!

The living room was delightful with a comfortable couch that made into two twin-size beds. This room also contained a large coffee table and TV. The official bedroom/study had a desk and computer lining one wall. A suspended bed -- extremely comfortable -- was easily and ingeniously lowered from the ceiling at night.

Garden

There were three tiny balconies with huge doors/windows leading to them. We could stand out there and take in the view. There were lovely, heavy drapes that could be closed when darkness and privacy were required at night.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

I truly cannot imagine a better furnished place. There was a compact, folding dining table and chairs which we never used, but the couch, coffee table, desk area and bed were all luxuriously comfortable and in excellent condition.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

As already mentioned, the beds were the best we've encountered in our travels.

The shower and sink area (the toilet was housed in a separate small room) were small, but the shower, particularly, was powerful in a good-sized enclosure. The toilet being housed in a separate area from the sink/shower was helpful when we were hurrying to get ready in the morning.

Kitchen

The kitchen was tiny and only one person could be there at a time, but it was extremely well-equipped, and we cooked most of our meals there. We also had a dishwasher and combination washing machine/dryer. It was fully equipped with enough pots, pans, and dishes for our use. Extra special touches that were provided included an ice cube tray, a corkscrew, and a few basic spices including salt and pepper.

Problems or Bonuses

We were amazed -- and still are -- at our good fortune at having found such a perfect apartment for so little money. David and I researched for a long time before choosing accommodations, and months of looking for Paris rentals had convinced us that the Magenta was the best "on paper." To find out that it was, remarkably, even better than we anticipated made our trip to Paris that much more wonderful.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We dealt directly with the owner who promptly answered all our e-mails. We paid a deposit via Pay-Pal and also a security deposit a few days before we left home. The security deposit was refunded to us the day we left Paris.

Phillipe was a joy to work with. He gave us a bottle of wine and a lovely book when we arrived, quickly solved a computer problem for us a couple days later, and was at the apartment promptly for our check-out on the morning we were leaving.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We loved the place although we think four people would find living there to be cramped! I would definitely stay here again and would urge my best friend to do so, too! There are no reservations about this apartment at all. It's the most thoughtfully equipped and furnished rental I've ever experienced. The location, too, is ideal for exploring all that Paris has to offer.

Truly, this was the best home base I can imagine for Paris. We will rent it again the next time we're in the city.
