Review 4364: La Maison des Poetes, Rimbaud/Cocteau

Review by Mosey from US

apartments in historic building in Sarlat, Aquitaine

9/5/09 - 10/3/09, 1 month

I spent one month in Sarlat and during that month rented two apartments in the same building from Phillip in La Maison des Poetes.

Sarlat is gorgeous and it was so nice to be in the middle of the town. At first I didn't have a car and that was fine. Once I had the car I had to figure out where the best (and closest) free parking was because much of Sarlat is primarily pedestrian. This was not a problem, but may be if during the high season or if people are elderly or disabled.

I loved the area because it was close to everything but not very noisy. It's great being in the middle of the town! I could not recommend this place more. We had a special month in Sarlat, and a big part of that was where we stayed.

Nearby Amenities

Everything was walking distance because Sarlat isn't that large. There was one grocery store around the corner (1 minute), a lovely place to get bread also just around the corner, restaurants everywhere, and wine stores all over. If you want a large supermarket you will need a car.

The House/Apartment

The building was very historic with many original features and in excellent condition.

The building has three units: Verlaine (1st floor), Rimbaud (2nd) and Cocteau (top). There is no elevator and the building is very historic with original features in a perfect spot in the center of Sarlat. I stayed in Rimbaud and Cocteau. Both apartments are furnished in a very lovely style with original art work and ceramics. The kitchens are complete except for an oven (although there is a stove top and dishwasher). Washer/Dryer makes it very convenient for us slow travelers.

Rimbaud is larger - especially the bathroom. Cocteau has lovely rooftop views of Sarlat and the Church.

There was a little street noise, but never late at night - only day time when the tourists walk below and sometimes early in the morning when the street sweeper comes along. Fresh bread around the corner, unbelievable market on Saturdays (smaller one on Wednesdays).

You can view the property directly: Rimbaud and Cocteau.

The spa on the main floor was a lovely treat: hot tub, sauna, exercise equipment. This was the place to relax before dinner.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Most of the furniture was in excellent condition. The artwork and ceramics made these apartments feel more homey and interesting than a hotel room. Both of the apartments I stayed in seemed perfect for a couple (Rimbaud had two single beds pushed together, Cocteau a queen size bed) or a couple with a young child (there is a pack and play in each apartment folded in the closet).

Rimbaud had a stunning bathroom with a jetted tub and shower. Cocteau had a very small, but nice bathroom. The bedrooms were both lovely and large enough, with closets.

We cooked all the time and found the kitchens perfectly adequate. I also know that if I needed anything I could have just asked Philip and he would have been very obliging.

Problems or Bonuses

These apartments were a delight!

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Philip was great to work with. He spoke excellent English and was incredibly helpful. I cannot say enough nice things about him and his apartments.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would absolutely stay here again!! I would recommend these apartments to any couple I know (unless they were elderly or infirm and couldn't handle walking up stairs).
