Review 4368: Feels Like Home in Paris, Caulaincourt Classique

Review by graceh9 from TN

1bed/1bath apartment in 18th arrondissement, Paris

June 2009, one week

A wonderful location on Rue Caulaincourt one of the most charming streets in Paris in Montmartre and with many shops nearby. It is a fairly short walk to the Lamark/caulaincourt Metro stop. Busy part of Paris.

Nearby Amenities

There are several greengrocers nearby including one right outside the entry door to the building. There are several bakeries within a short stroll. Wine shops, cheese shop, spots to buy rotisserie meats and a regular grocery store all nearby.

There are also many restaurants and bars in the area and it is not a very long walk to the lively restaurant and shopping area around the Abbesses Metro stop and the butcher shops, seafood shops etc.

The House/Apartment

Old building. Small elevator as well as the usual winding stairs. The apartment fronts on Rue Caulaincourt, which is a noisy street but the apartment has double glazed windows which block the sound. The only problem is that after a hot day, it is nice to have windows open at night to let cool air in and that also lets noise in. We left the window open in the kitchen area for air while not opening the bedroom window which worked fairly well. Always travel with ear plugs in European cities. They are all noisy.

The bedroom stand-up air conditioner works but it seems moldy and left me with a sore throat in the morning, so we didn't use it.

You can view the property directly: Caulaincourt Classique.

No outdoor space.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The living room/kitchen is a bit cramped and the dining table is one of those awful fold up models with chairs stowed underneath. They are not designed for convenient constant use and one leaf was broken. The manager indicated that it would be replaced with a coffee table that could be raised and lowered -- which would certainly make better use of the space. We were sort of tripping over stuff in the cluttered living space. The couch is comfortable. There is a HDTV but we don't watch TV on vacation so can't speak to its range etc.

It would be hard to have more than two, perhaps three people for dinner with the dining table arrangements.

The decor is pleasant and the apartment is well maintained.

The bed is very comfortable. There is a computer with on line access in the bedroom as well as WiFi in the apartment for your own laptop. Some closet space in the bedroom and a chest of drawers. It is a cramped space. Nice closet/drawers in the entryway.

A duvet without a top sheet in summer just doesn't work for us. Can anyone sleep under a duvet in warm weather? We couldn't locate a top sheet or light blanket to substitute so just removed the duvet from the cover and used the cover as a top cover without the duvet. This worked fine.

The water closet is right outside the bedroom. The bathroom, which is off the living room (entry door is into the living room), has a nice tub with shower, heated towel rods, and an American style washer and separate dryer which made traveling with light luggage easy.

The kitchen is small but very well equipped with appropriate cookware and serving ware and dishes. We cook in most nights and always have breakfast in the apartment and the kitchen was well equipped to produce full meals. It is pretty much a 'one cook' space. There is no dishwasher but the storage cabinet for the dishes is designed as a drying rack and it is convenient to wash up a few things.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

This was a lovely location. The apartment was comfortable and nicely cleaned and maintained.

The agents of Feels Like Home in Paris are very easy to deal with. They provide the kind of information tourists need in the apartment (i.e., a guide to the nearby amenities, guide books, starter kit of washing machine soap, tea and coffee etc and a bottle of wine). The apartment is well stocked with very nice towels and linens and such amenities as dish soap and toilet paper. And they show up when they say they will.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

This was our second rental from this agency and we would highly recommend them -- they follow through, they pay attention to quality, they immediately refund the deposit.
