Review 4369: Feels Like Home in Paris, Merveille de Montmartre

Review by graceh9 from TN

1bed/1bath apartment in 18th arrondissement, Paris

May 07, ten days

It is located on Rue Marcadet, which is definitely out of the busy touristy part of Montmartre. There is a small playground/park square (Carpaux) down the street aways filled with locals. It is a bit of a walk to the Metro; we used Lamark/Caulaincourt Metro. This is a great spot for someone who has 'done' tourist Paris and wants a spot in a more typical residential area. We loved the location, but it wouldn't be a good choice for a first time Paris tourist there for a short stay.

Nearby Amenities

There were nearby bakeries and shops. At the base of the street there Rue St. Owens which is a market street and has great butcher and greengrocer shops. There are some very fine bakeries and a great cheese shop and wine shops on Rue Damremont which is not far. We got macaroons in this area that were cheaper and just as good IMHO as those at Laduree.

The House/Apartment

As I recall it was not a terribly old building.

You can view the property directly Merveille de Montmartre.

There is no outside space with the apartment but as noted above there is a nice local park/square just a couple blocks down the street and Montmartre has lots of nice park areas especially near Sacre Couer (to the back of the church).

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

This place felt new to us. The furniture was in great shape and very convenient and comfortable. A nice little table and chairs for dining that would accommodate four people and a leather couch. Everything was in perfect shape.

The apartment was spotless. The pictures on the website represent it accurately.

The layout makes this a suitable apartment for two couples or a couple with children. The living room has a wardrobe cabinet and can be completely closed off from the rest of the apartment so that it can serve as a second private bedroom.

Because the kitchen has a small seating area, if one group got up earlier than the other, they would have living space that didn't require using the living room. Very artful use of limited space. The bathroom and kitchen are accessed off the entry and the bedroom and living room are separate rooms accessed off this entry space.

The bed was very comfortable and made up with very nice new linens. The bathroom linens were also lovely. There was a drying rack over the tub and a washing machine, which makes traveling light easy. The bathroom was fine -- but it did not have a separate water closet, which is rather common in French apartments. Having only the one full bath might make it a tight squeeze for two couples sharing space. It was fine for the two of us.

The kitchen was great and very well equipped. We cooked in the apartment and it was fine for producing meals. There is also a dishwasher. It looked like it had been furnished from IKEA days before. Well equipped with cooking and serving dishes and china.

The kitchen has a seating area as well as a breakfast bar.

Problems or Bonuses

Only problem was an occasional problem with sewer gas from the drain pipe in the kitchen -- this is a not uncommon problem in older buildings but is one that needs fixing. The agents were working on it and it was not a constant problem. We did take care to keep the bedroom door closed at night.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Yetunde and this agency are very attentive. They follow through. They provide guides to the local area and other guidebooks of use to tourists and the apartment is well stocked with amenities. We appreciated the collection of CDs with Parisian cafe songs for example.

There is WiFI, which is important to us -- and there was a laptop in the apartment so we were both on line at the same time. Not everyone cares -- but we do.

It was 850 per week and they were great about adding a couple of pro-rated days when we decided to extend a bit.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

This was a great apartment. If there slight plumbing problem is fixed this would be a top recommendation -- very nice place.
