Vacation rentals in France (farms, cottages, gites, apartments)
Review 4385: Owner, 30 Rue Campane (#112057)
1bed/1bath apartment in Avignon, Provence
October 2009, 3 weeks
Location of this apartment was quite central. Easy walk to Palais des Popes and other sights in Avignon and about 20 minute walk to the central rail and bus station in Avignon.
Nearby were all the amenities you needed - supermarket, cafes, restaurants, Internet cafe etc.
The apartment was on the ground floor and consisted of a double bedroom, bathroom with shower, lounge/dining area with a sofa bed, and smallish galley kitchen with refrigerator and hotplates (no oven).
No garden, but off the bedroom was an enclosed terrace with seating and umbrella.
The furniture was adequate and the apartment mostly clean when we arrived. The lounge area had a sofa bed and small dining table with four chairs, coffee table and TV.
The double bed was comfortable and there was enough wardrobe space. The bathroom had a small window that opened out onto the terrace area, but the shower area was a bit moldy and the shower curtain needed a good clean.
The kitchen was small and could have been better equipped. Only two pots for cooking and numerous kitchen items not supplied. The dishes were okay and there was a fry pan, but cutlery needs to be replaced.
Problems or Bonuses
When we arrived we found there was no electric kettle, no can opener, no toaster, no tea towels and the two pots that were used for cooking had seen a bit of wear. The linen consisted of the sheets on the bed and two towels and there was no change of linen/towels for the three weeks.
Also, although there was cable TV, there were no English channels available. Another problem was that being on the ground floor, our door to the apartment, which was inside a small entrance way, was right next to the main entrance door for all the occupants of the building and every time someone came and went they would slam the door, usually very early in the morning. It frequently woke us up.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
Our communication with the owner prior to arriving was great. Everything went smoothly, she spoke English and met us at the apartment as arranged. She quickly showed us through the apartment then that was the last we saw of her. We contacted her a few times trying to get the TV to work, but although she had replied to our texts, she was not in Avignon and had gone on holiday.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
Although the location was great and everything was at hand, I don't think I would stay here again, purely because the kitchen wasn't equipped to the standard I would expect a vacation rental to be and also being on the ground floor attracted a lot of noise from other occupants and their guests. For people who only wanted to stay a few days and wanted to eat out most of the time, it would be fine, but any longer, you would require more than this apartment offered.
Things to do in this area
Avignon is a good base for exploring the rest of Provence. The buses and trains from the Avignon station will take you mostly everywhere. We took two tours to villages that were not accessible by bus/train with a company called Lieutard, which were excellent - ask for Carol-Lee as your guide, she was great.
