2bed/1bath apartment in the Marais, Paris

When

January - March 2010, 2 months

Location

The apartment is located right in the heart of the Marais. It is on the fourth floor and there is an elevator. The area is fabulous - everything you need is at your doorstep and it is within walking distance to all the major attractions of Paris. If you don't want to walk you are minutes from two Metro stations - Hotel de Ville and St. Paul. Several bus lines also run at the bottom of the street.

Nearby Amenities

The closest grocery store (FranPrix) is literally right across the street - five steps from the front door. It was completely re-done while we were there so everything is fresh and clean. There are three patisseries within a three minute walk and restaurants right next door, also there are five right at the bottom of the street - two minutes away. We particularly enjoyed the patisserie around the corner on Rue Vielle du Temple and the Italian restaurant at the bottom of the street had great food. There are numerous places to eat, have a coffee or enjoy a snack within the neighborhood. For falafel lovers the famous Rue de Rosier is a four minute walk away. For tea lovers you are right across the street from Mariage Freres. You could not ask for a better location as far as we were concerned. There is also a PICARDS just up the street on Rue des Francs Bourgeois. It is a frozen food store that has everything from Croquille St. Jacques to the most amazing desserts - a great thing to have after a long day of walking the streets. We loved everything we tried from there.

The House/Apartment

The apartment was newly renovated so everything was in excellent working order. This was the first time we had a washer/dryer where the clothes actually came out dry! For coffee connoisseur there is a Nespresso machine. After making a trip to the Nespresso store and trying the capsules we decided we preferred a drip coffee maker. Basically because of the size. We asked Marcel if he had any machines in other apartments that were not being used and he told us to just go buy one and give him the receipt! WOW! He also bought us a brand new oven after we discovered Picards. The apartment was quiet and the having the shower and toilet separated made for quick exits in the morning when we had company.

The heating system worked well, because it was winter we did not use the air conditioning but it is there.

You can view the property here and here.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

As I said the apartment had just been renovated so everything was new and in great condition. The master bedroom had lots of storage space and the bed was very comfortable. The second bedroom has two single beds in it - there are two small compartments to put things in and lots of overhead storage. This room faces the street and there was never a problem with noise.

There is a brand new desktop computer in the master bedroom - we both had laptops so did not use it but I am sure it works. The flat screen TV was great and Marcel got extra channels for us so that we could watch the Olympics. There is enough room for four to sit at the table for dinner, we had seven for dinner one night and there was plenty of space using the table and the chairs in the living room. The pull out couch in the living room is also comfortable.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

The bathroom is split into two rooms -having a toilet and sink in one room and a sink and shower in another room. At first it seemed odd but it was great when four of us were trying to get ready to go out for the day. The shower has a removable hand held device as well as an overhead rain shower. Lots of hot water and towels. There is a towel heater that is lovely for those cold January mornings.

Kitchen

The kitchen is fine, although we were there for quite a while once we discovered Picards spending hours in the kitchen was not necessary. However, there were brand new pots and pans, cutlery and utensils. We had everything we needed. There is a toaster, everything you need is supplied.

Problems or Bonuses

The biggest surprise was how accommodating the owner was - Marcel asked us if there was anything we wanted and when we said an oven it was there the next day, when we said a coffee maker he said OK get what you want and give me the receipt. (The BHV department store is three minutes away so it was very convenient and lots of choice.)

We had a terrible experience with USAPARIS who left us high and dry for an apartment we had rented. We basically had four days to find an apartment and I honestly feel fortunate and privileged that we found Marcel. He helped us out of a tight spot and accepted us with our dog. Not a little Parisian puppy but an adult Portuguese Water Dog. He made sure we had everything we needed and were comfortable. He arranged parking for our car and gave us information on the area.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We have rented apartments for the last year while traveling in the EU and I can say without a doubt that Marcel and his family went above and beyond the call of duty. They aim to please!

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We will return to Paris and when we do we will most certainly be contacting Marcel. I would not hesitate to recommend him to my best friend. You can rely on his word and trust him.
