Vacation rentals in France (farms, cottages, gites, apartments)
Review 4497: Yellow Stay, Louvre - Modern
1bed/1bath apartment in 1st arrondissement, Paris
September 2009, ten days
The location of the apartment is fabulous. It is close to the Louvre, the fabulous market street, rue Montorgueil with its wonderful boulangeries, charcuteries, etc. and there are two metro stations (Palais Royal Musee du Louvre and Louvre Rivoli)in close proximity.
There were two small supermarkets in nearby rue Montorgueil, which was about ten minutes from the apartment.
The building is fairly new with a lift. There were other rentals in the building but I do not think that they were managed by the same agency.
You can view the property directly: Louvre - Modern.
The apartment did not have an outside sitting area or garden.
The futon in the lounge room was broken and the chair in the bedroom was also broken. The apartment was generally dirty. There were food scraps splashed up the wall near the kitchen refuse bin. The bath was dirty and the toilet looked as if it had never been cleaned. Luckily there was a supermarket nearby and with the aid of bleach, sponges and various cleansers, we managed to make the apartment habitable.
The bed was comfortable although it was basic. I was glad that I did not look at the mattress until I stripped the bed when we departed. The mattress cover was less than clean and it appeared to be stained by body fluids.
The bathroom was basic but usable once it was cleaned.
The kitchen was usable, but we had to wash all the utensils and plates as they were all sticky. Even all the knives had dirt between the handles and the blade. The apartment did not have a dishwasher and it would appear that previous tenants had better things to do in Paris than wash up.
Problems or Bonuses
We were surprised on arrival to learn that the apartment that we had booked and prepaid was not available. The apartment in rue du Bouloi was a replacement apartment. The apartment was a less expensive rental than the one that we had chosen and paid for. I was surprised that it was listed as a 4-star apartment as we would rate it at 2-3 star.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
We arrived on a Saturday morning and in spite of phoning the agency and leaving a message and also emailing the agency, we did not receive a response until later in the week. By this time we had cleaned the apartment and although it was fairly ordinary, we decided to stay there.
The agency offered additional cleaning, but by this time we had cleaned the apartment ourselves.
The agency did refund the difference in price between the apartment that we had booked and the apartment that we received.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I would not stay here again although the location was fabulous. The condition of the apartment was less than desirable. I would definitely not recommend it to my best friend.
Things to do in this area
The area was fabulous with close proximity to the Louvre, Tuileries, a short walk across the Pont des Artistes to the left bank. It only took 1/2 hour to walk to the Centre Pompidou. If you are staying in the 1st arrondissement try The Pied au Cochon, which is quite famous for its onion soup. The rue Montorgueil is fabulous for food shopping and even though we ate out most of the time, we always gave into temptation and took home some pate or an exquisite treat from one of the patisseries there. Agnes B and Max and Co also offered some good retail therapy and both boutiques were only a short walk from our apartment. A 30 - 40 minute walk across the Seine takes you into St Germaine and Restaurant Alcazar in rue Mazarine is a must.
