Review 4712: Six Cottages in France, La Maison des Arcades (Gascony)
3bed/1bath house near near Marciac, Gascony, Pyrenees
June 2010, 1 week
Rory and I really loved the week in June 2010 that we spent in the Richards cottage La Maison des Arcades in the quaint little village of Tillac, in the heart of the Gascony region of France.
The cottage itself is well set up and comfortable, with a great selection of books, CD's and DVD's. Best is the really plentiful hot water which was a pleasant surprise after our lukewarm experience in other accommodation. We enjoyed the welcoming bottle of local wine, and reading the Visitors Book and Restaurant Book to see what others had enjoyed.
There is an excellent brand new washing machine and a good dryer, although most of the time we used the clothesline in the lane behind the cottage. And you can walk to get the bread. There is also a very good butcher.
The kitchen is great. We really appreciated the slow cooker, so that we could put our rabbit and prunes on before we went touring for the day, then come home to a fine home-cooked meal. We loved the back pack picnic set, and also the picnic table. There is so much to do and see in the area and the Pyrenees beyond that we often didn't want to spend time on the traditional two hour lunch, although we did fall to temptation once or twice.
There are some really excellent restaurants in the area, including the village restaurant. On our last night we decided to spend a little more and had a really great meal for around €30, plus wine, at La Rive Droite, about 14Km down the road in Villecomptal.
Next year we plan to try one of the other Richards cottages maybe in the Lot region.
