Vacation rentals in France (farms, cottages, gites, apartments)
Review 4742: Les Mortiers, Poppas
1bed/1bath apartment near Parcay Les Pins, Loire Valley
July 2010, 5 nights
Les Mortiers is a group of renovated farm houses/buildings in the countryside surrounded by farm fields, just a mile from the small village of Parcay Les Pins, in the Loire Valley, west of Tours. There are three vacation rentals on the property, plus the owner's house and workshop (they make silk fishing lines). We stayed in Poppas which is in the building across from the owner's house. Each rental has an outside area which looks out to the farm fields.
The nearest village, Parcay, has a cafe and a bakery. The bakery is good, but the cafe is not. The best cafes are about 30 minutes away in the towns along the Loire. These towns have good weekly markets, restaurants and supermarkets.
The farm buildings have been nicely remodeled. The location is peaceful and quiet. Our apartment, Poppas, is on one level but has an extra living room area upstairs (we did not use this). There is a table in the kitchen for eating (which we used) and a dining table in the living/dining room, which we used as a desk. There was Internet access.
This building has a storage area next to our apartment and another apartment above the storage area. We did not hear any noise from these areas. The other vacation rental is in a separate building.
We had a nice terrace off the kitchen, facing out to the owner's garden and farm fields. There is a large pool with lots of loungers and chairs. The pool is purified by an oxygen system (instead of using chlorine), which I liked.
Nice furnishings, comfortable bed, everything very clean. Comfortable chairs in the living room but a very small TV off to the side in the room. We never used it.
The bed was very comfortable (a US double size) with lovely quality sheets. The bathroom was good with a big shower.
The kitchen was good. We cooked several dinners there.
Problems or Bonuses
The owners, Jean and Mike, live on-site and are very friendly. They know the area well and can direct you to restaurants, etc. The area is pretty and very peaceful.
It was a hot few days when we were there and we wanted to have all the windows/doors open, but it was a bit buggy, so the apartment felt stuffy. It seems like "no screens on windows" is not just an Italian way of doing things, but also French. Now that I think of it you don't find many screens on windows in England, but there are not so many bugs here.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
I booked directly with the owner and paid by UK check. Jean allowed us to book for five nights instead of the usual Saturday to Saturday as we were booking close to the travel date (which was very nice of her). Jean has a lot of good local travel information on her website. Currently, the Poppoas apartment is not listed on the website but is available and should be listed soon.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I recommend this as a nice and well priced rental centrally located to see the Loire towns west of Tours.
Things to do in this area
We were looking for a good cafe in a nearby town, but did not find one. I never expected to get bad coffee in France - but we had several on this trip!
I liked the towns on the Loire. Saumur is about 30 minutes away by car. We went to Angers (about an hour by car on a very boring Autoroute) and loved the town. The Apocalypse Tapestries were wonderful.
