Review 4745: Paris Furnished Apartments, 34 rue de Turenne

Review by Zseni from US

2bed/2bath apartment in 3rd arrondissement, Paris

August 2010, 11 days

This is in a great location in the Marais, two blocks north of the Place des Vosges, two blocks from the upscale shopping street Francs-Bourgeois and the Carnavalet Museum, and about a 10-15 minute walk to three metro stations. There is a boulangerie/patisserie on the same block two doors down (but closed in August), and a restaurant a block away. Several upscale patisseries are located on Rue Saint-Antoine, which is five short blocks south.

The apartment faces entirely into a quiet courtyard so you hear no noise. It is 2.5 flights of stairs up with no elevator. The schematic of the layout on the agency's website is not complete or accurate. There is one toilet in the master bathroom and a toilet (by itself) in a tiny closet near the front door. The second (children's) bathroom has no toilet. The layout is such that you have to walk through one bedroom (that has two twin beds) to get to the master bath and bedroom. The apartment is therefore most appropriate for a family with children rather than two couples. The master bath has the toilet and a bathtub with a good shower in it. It is small and it is open air above a sliding smoked glass door. For privacy the doors to both the children's bedroom and the master bedroom have to be shut, somewhat difficult because they are old doors.

There is air conditioning in the master bedroom, although it did not work when we arrived and had to be fixed. The apartment has very high beamed ceilings making it seem spacious, particularly the bedrooms.

The kitchen is well equipped and relatively large with appliances, including a combined washer/dryer, and cooking implements and staples, including spices.

The living area is moderate in size, with a combined dining/living room area with a dining table large enough for six, and a sofa, table and two chairs and small TV. There is free WiFi, but you must find and read the owner's guest book to get information on how to connect. The agency provided only oral instructions which were erroneous. The telephone receives only incoming calls; again, the agency will tell you that you can make free calls within Paris, which is erroneous.

The apartment had been vacant a week when we arrived there; nevertheless, it had not been cleaned or the linens changed when we arrived, and although we did not seek to use it until late afternoon the cleaning person had to clean around us as we slept. In addition, the agency had been notified that the second bathroom was not in working order but it had not been fixed when we arrived. Plumbers fixed the problem on the second day of our stay. The agency did refund half a day's rent.

Notwithstanding the problems, we liked this apartment very much and would stay there again should we travel to Paris.

You can view the property directly: 34 rue de Turenne.
