Vacation rentals in France (farms, cottages, gites, apartments)
Review 4751: Owner, Paris Sweet 36
1bed/1bath apartment in Latin Quarter, Paris
July 2010, 5 days
The apartment was well located in the Latin Quarter with separate entrance to Rue Mouffetard and Rue Tournefort. The area has one of the best markets in Paris, is full of restaurants, but its streets are quiet at night.
Everything between these two streets is within comfortable walking distance including restaurants, groceries and laundry.
The building is about 200 years old and has a central courtyard with a garden. The apartment is located on the third floor and has lift access to it.
The courtyard and garden are shared with other owner/occupiers of apartments in the complex.
The apartment was well furnished. Everything is modern and recently refurbished. It is suited to occupation by two people.
The queen size bed was comfortable and in view of neighboring rooftops through the third story window.
The kitchen included and oven, microwave oven, toaster, pots and pans, etc.
Problems or Bonuses
Unfortunately, the owner did not disclose the need to sign a contract or pay a large security deposit until after the deposit had been paid. None of this was mentioned on the website.
We were required to agree that a photo album containing pictures of the apartment's contents were present and sign a form accordingly. Without conducting a full inventory, this is an unrealistic requirement.
We returned one day to find that the owner had been in the apartment and left a note telling us of more rules to be observed, in addition to the long list in the guest information folder.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
The arrangement was made directly with the owner. The price paid was supposedly discounted by 30%, but at that price was comparable to many other nearby apartments of similar quality.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
While the apartment was comfortable and well decorated, the owner was overly fussy and seemed to care only about what was described as a "fabulous four star" apartment than the guests.
We could not recommend the apartment based on what we felt as the argumentative and unpleasant behavior we experienced with the owner.
We had a problem when the daily cleaning included in the rental price did not occur one day. What should have been a simple matter to resolve deteriorated quickly with the owner stating that the service wasn't included, and as we were paying a discounted price, what was the problem. The subsequent conversation ended with the owner saying that she would never rent the apartment to us again, ordering us out of the apartment, and locking the door before returning our security deposit.
We have rented apartments in this area before and have only had pleasant memories of the both the apartments and their owners. This was an unpleasant exception. This is one landlord who seems unable to deal with the normal sorts of guest issues when renting an apartment and resorted to argument instead of problem solving.
Things to do in this area
Numerous restaurants around Place Contrascarpe are worth trying - but particularly a little Vietnamese restaurant off to one corner.
