Vacation rentals in France (farms, cottages, gites, apartments)
Review 4799: Cottages 4 You, Manoir De Kerverguen (#T29361)
sleeps 8, Loctudy, Brittany
2010, 2 weeks
It was surrounded by trees and very quiet. It was about 1 km from the lovely fishing village of Loctudy, which has a number of good beaches.
Ten minute walk to a supermarche. A 20 minute walk to other shops and restaurants.
The structure of the property was in good shape.
It had a private outside seating area. It did not have what I would call a lawn (as stated in the agent's property description). The was a scrappy are of grass.
The furniture was of mixed quality. The property was clean. There were sufficient chairs.
The bedrooms themselves were OK but the beds and bedding were not. The beds were not made even though the caretaker (more on this lady below) knew that we were arriving late at night after a long day's traveling. The bedding was very poor quality (one sheet had a hole in it and everything was very worn) and was not changed half way through our two week stay. One of the mattresses did not fit its bed. Not what you expect for more than £1,100 a week.
The property description said that the master double bed room had an en-suite bathroom. It did, but it didn't include a WC, for which you had to go downstairs and through the half the house.
The kitchen was adequate (just), but the pans and utensils were poor quality, a common problem with holiday rentals).
Problems or Bonuses
We paid a deposit of €150 to the caretaker who lived on site. We didn't break anything and spent about three hours cleaning on the last day.
Madame Caretaker refused to give a cent back. She pointed to the odd smear on the tiled floors, which we had swept and mopped using the filthy mop provided. She pointed to a mark on a sink and to some fluff in the tumble drier. She wouldn't listen to a word we said and claimed that the place needed four then six hours work. She obviously considered that she was entitled to retain the deposit come what may.
After we complained to the agency after returning home, we were told that the owner had refunded €70. He hadn't. Eventually this sum was sent to us by the agency.
My family have rented gites on many occasions (50+ between us) over the last 20 years and this is the first time that anything like this has happened to us.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
The agency could not have known what was going on. It was caught between a rock and a hard place.
Madame Caretaker was a nightmare (see above). She didn't speak English. We got a flavour of what we were in for when we read one of her notes. This offered us pieces of wood (which were lying around outside)for the open fire at just under €1 a piece.
The price was just over £1,100 a week in August (high season).
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
No, we feel that we were cheated and would not have got a cent of our deposit back if we had not made a fuss when we got home.
Anyone who does go may as well not lift a finger or take care of the place or its contents, because Madame Caretaker is going keep the deposit whatever happens. I'm sure that this is not how the owner wants his property to be treated.
Things to do in this area
Lovely area with great beaches. I will return to Loctudy but not to this property.
