1bed/1bath apartment in 3rd arrondissement, Paris

When

January 5, 2011, 30 days

Location

Located in the 3rd eme in Le Marais on a busy side street. The location was perfect and we had our choice of four metro stops within the vicinity. Walking distance to Notre Dame, Pompidou and Marais. First floor of an apartment building but situated directly above a bar and it was loud! Wednesday through Sunday till 2am was loud music. Prevented any sleep until the bands stopped and the music was turned off.

Nearby Amenities

The perfect walking distance to many things. Grocery store on the corner, market down the block. Tons of bakeries, boulangeries, within two blocks. Large Monoprix within a few blocks. The location was the saving grace of the apartment.

The House/Apartment

It was a beautiful building, 17th century. The apartment was in fair condition. We had numerous issues and had to have the repair person out a number of times during the month. Curtain rods fell down, specialty light bulbs missing, water heater not working.

It was spacious for a Paris apartment at just over 500 sq. ft. First floor of 5, no elevator. Very noisy. The living area was street side, the bedroom was courtyard side and was almost just as noisy from the other tenants. Windows are not soundproofed. Bar directly below flat.

Garden

No outside sitting area or garden. Just a walk-through to get to the sidewalk but was kept clean.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Linens had not been changed or washed from the last guest. They were filthy. There were no other linens left for us in the flat. We had one filthy fitted fit, no top sheets and two filthy pillows cases. Stripped off dirty sheet and mattress pad was even worse, we stripped that off and 1/2 of the mattress was completely covered in urine. It was revolting. Pillows/duvets/all linens were disgusting. Someone came the next day to clean the sheets and mattress pad and left us another sheet that she told not to use because of blood stains.

For one month we had 1 fitted sheet and 2 pillowcases for use on a hard urine stained bed. All the linens, etc. were shabby/worn. We spent the first day cleaning the flat.

The shower was covered in mold, bathroom was dirty, floors hadnít been vacuumed, walls/windows were dirty, dusty.

There was no toilet paper, trash bags, paper towels, napkins or cleaning supplies so we had to go out immediately to purchase all these. We were also told we were required to clean the apartment before we checked out so it would be ready for the next guests. The flat manager came and checked it before we left. We left the apartment 100 times cleaner than when we checked in. If you are going to require us to clean the flat, there should be cleaning supplies supplied.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

The filthy bed was almost unbearably uncomfortable. It was just a foam mattress, not a real bed. The sofa bed was horrible. The bathroom comments are listed under "Surprises." Another funny thing about the bathroom is that your feet didn't touch the floor when sitting on the toilet. I am 5'9" so it wasn't because of my height.

Kitchen

Kitchen was OK. We could never figure out the dishwasher or washing machine. Oven hadn't been cleaned and filled the entire flat with smoke. Dishes and pots and pans were below average. Two knives and they were dull. No measuring cups or spoons. No serving dishes.

Problems or Bonuses

There is a horrid stench of SEWER coming up the pipes in bathroom. We did complain and were told they were aware of it but it was too expensive to fix. It was so bad, we would sometimes gag going into the bathroom. We were told to buy air fresheners which didn't help at all.

The entire shower is made of glass block; the walls of the bathroom are also glass block. You can see the person taking their shower and using the toilet from the "office" area, hallway and kitchen. Not at all private.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Owner was decent on responses, etc. He does speak English. The flat manager also spoke English but was not responsive on email or phone and was very unpleasant to work with.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Absolutely NOT! The stench of sewer for 30 days and the bar below the flat are complete deal breakers.
