1bed/1bath apartment near Ceyreste, Provence

When

May 28, 2011, 1 week

Location

Nicely located east of Cassis and north of Ceyreste, four miles on a hillside. Very private independent gite enclosed with owner's beautiful home with another attached gite. This is a lovely area to use as a base to explore the Mediterranean either side of Marseille and hill towns northeast. St. Tropez would be doable in a day as would Arles to the west and north to Gordes etc.

Nearby Amenities

Drivable to grocery stores etc., in five minutes - steep road up from Ceyreste would make a tough walk! We found wonderful restaurants in Cassis and other seaside towns within 30 minutes drive.

The gite has a lovely sitting area to enjoy an aperitif in the evening along with our evening repast picked up at many local markets.

The House/Apartment

The gite was built in the last 20 years I think and in tiptop shape with good furnishings. Very peaceful and quiet except when the frog pond would get chirping!! We had good french TV and computer access.

A second gite has been built and attached to the main house which looked wonderful also when we looked at it. They also have a nice B&B type room below the main house that was lovely. The original home that they purchased 28 years ago was quite old!

Garden

We had a very nice private deck to sit on. Good views of the surrounding hills. There was not a pool. There was a nice table and chairs with umbrella.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furnishings were all in very good shape and comfortable - the bed was a good sized queen. The gite was spotless when we arrived. There was a small table for indoor dining that was adequate for two. The sofa was very nice.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

Very nice bed as I mentioned. It had its own outside door and had nice closet space. The bathroom was very large with a nice shower and storage cabinet.

Kitchen

The kitchen as a bit small but had a nice counter to work on, a good gas stove and large refrigerator. The pots and pans and utensils were very useable. One could cook a full meal, if so desired.

Problems or Bonuses

I felt very comfortable dealing with Jacques who is a retired teacher while booking the gite - very responsive and knowledgeable. He went out of his way to help us with a computer to use for the Internet and telephone help to make reservations.

He has a bit of a zoo on the property with the frog pond, a turtle enclosure and two goats and a rabbit that share a cute pen adorned by Jacques's favorite prints to calm them.

He spoke very good English as did his wife. We didn't see much of Suzanne as she still teaches.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We connected directly with Jacques by email. The web site is very good to show the two gites and informative about the area. Jacques was very flexible on a deposit as he only wanted a personal check which I doubt he could cash as it was in dollars.

We paid 450 for the week which was low season - I really felt this was a bargain when comparing past gites we have rented.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Absolutely we would recommend Jacques and his lovely property. The gites are first rate in quality and comfort with Jacques's helpfulness as a much added bonus and his "zoo" was nice to view!

Jacques pretty much books full by early spring for both gites so don't wait till the last minute to book!!

Things to do in this area

We visited many of the towns on the Mediterranean like Cassis and La Ciotat and the Bandol area for those great red wines for this AOC - many wineries to visit plus the central tasting room in Bandol. Cassis is known for its white wines that go so well with the excellent seafood. We had excellent seafood meals in many of the towns nearby!

Explore by boat the calanques, Aix, and hill towns in the Var too numerous to mention.

I think the Provence is our favorite area in France but then all of France is our favorite.
